I'm taking organic 2 right now, and it bores the heck out of me. I read the book, but am unable to get excited about the material. My dislike of the subject sometimes makes me wonder how I'll tolerate this kind of material ad nauseum in med school. Is it bad that I'm not obsessed with science, and don't get all excited about it?

How do you keep yourselves motivated to study these often dry subjects? Have the pre-reqs ever made you have second thoughts about medicine?

Don't even sweat it...most of the pre-reqs are stuff you'll barely see in med school, if at all. I disliked gen chem, physics, calculus, and some of the biologies (all pre-reqs) and they're totally different than the classes you'll take in med school. The only similarity I would say is biochem (which I hated). Definitely question if you want to go to med school, but don't do it on account of the weed out classes.

I'm just starting out. I really like bio but chem is kicking my ass. Chem alone makes me ask myself "WHAT did I get myself into"😱

how many years into college are you guys and girls?

This is my second year but I'm just now starting on pre req's.

I'm a junior, and will be applying senior year.

I really shouldn't have done a science major....

I am a junior and I wish someone had told me that I didn't need to be a biology major to go into medicine... I mean I love biology but I don't enjoy Evolutionary Biology or some of the other required courses.

To me gen chem and physics were the worst... I did well in physics 1 and haven't taken physics 2 yet but I just don't enjoy it at all

I love history... I wish I would have done more in terms of history courses... o well.

who in their right mind would get excited about organic chemistry? once you are done with it you are done. its not taught in med school. i HATE physics. i HATE organic chemistry. i don't really enjoy general chemistry that much either (but i dislike it w/ less of a passion). i enjoy biology the most by and i am truly fascinated with the human body....heeeey good thing thats what the first two years of med school are going to be centered around and then the rest of my career after that will be applying that knowledge to the real world!!!

it doesnt bother me cuz i know after the MCAT i never have to think about it again. thats my motivation to study for the test. that its only 2 years. 2 years that will give me endless opportunitiies for the rest of my life.

i have no doubt i will be fascinated by the classes i take in med school. and guess what, you dont see physics, chemistry, or organic chemistry in a med school curriculum.

do what you have to so that you can do what you want to do.

I can't say I get excited about Organic Chem, but it is a lot more interesting than physics and gen chem. and other inorganic chem classes.

just do it

I feel Chem classes are much more intellectually stimulating then Bio ones. Rote memorization is overrated.

prereqs suck so bad.....

I guess I just always looked at pre-req classes as being something that I had to learn to enjoy in order to get a good grade. I remember not being enthusiastic about bio lab exams back in the day but to be honest I really enjoyed o-chem, physics, and biochem. You may not really enjoy it but it's important that you do well.

I wish all classes could be as fun and interesting as ochem. It rates right up there with calculus in my favorite subjects this semester. I've really enjoyed all of my science classes. They're all classes that I'd try to take, no matter what my major, just because they are interesting.

I feel your pain, though. It's bad enough spending a semester in a boring gen. ed. course. I'm sure it feels like torture to have to drag through a science class that doesn't grab your interest.

Organic is cool. Its Pchem that will bend you over.

so you enjoyed ochem...... the real question that you have failed to answer is are you in your right state of mind? i think its debatable 😉

you definitely are not in a right state of mind. 😉

Strangely I agree. But my brain takes it's merry 'ol time processing chem. I get bio faster, not super fast but liek 5 times faster than chem

I actually liked ochem way better than gen chem and physics and I think most people would say that. But it's not like I *loved* it when I was doing the homework problems. It got tedious, yes, but think of the applications to the real world. For example, the conversion between cis and trans-retinal and its role in vision. When you get to that stuff in med school, it is much easier to quickly grasp if you've already been through o-chem and know all about cis and trans. There are many examples like this and that's why it's a pre-req.

I think that if you "just don't get very excited" about basic science, that's alright. As long as you DO get excited about biology and human physiology especially. If not, you may want to reconsider medicine because that's what you will become an expert in.

the pre-reqs are courses I would have done out of sheer pleasure, even if I was barred from medicine as a career.

ditto to many of the above. physics sucked, pchem sucked, organic sucks (but less than the other two). I've enjoyed my bios fairly significantly but the rest of this I'm just praying to get through with a's.

I finish physics in less than a week. studying my ass off so april 18th is the last time I see it, ever.

i enjoy the anatomy and a major like kinesiology would be awesome, but physics sucks a whole lot.

I enjoyed Ochem and Bio/Genetics, but Gen Chem and Physics were the bane of my pre-med existence. They're the biggest weed-out classes for pre-meds at my school, so they just have to be fought through.

Though the supposed "Pre-medical" advisers here say you MUST take biology or you're "screwed" and have "no chance"

whoop whoop kinesiology raise the roof. haha. i'm a kines major and proud of it. i have so much for fun than the chem/bio/biochem/physics majors!

cbrons: your pre med advisor said you are screwed w/o a bio major or w/o any bio classes?

p.s. how do you quote two people in the same post i couldnt find a button anywhere but i know people do it.

Being a bio major did exactly | | this much for me. I enjoyed Ochem far more than memorizing the clades of some terribleness ad nauseum. If I did it all over again, I would have been a physics, math or English major. Bio just isn't taught well at my school.

How can you guys love kinesiology, but hate physics? Kinesiology is like one big statics/mechanics question.

I must be a nerd because I love being a science major 🙂

I would rather sit through 100 OChem labs and lectures than 1 political science or history lesson. (yes this is an exaggeration)

<3 science <3

I applied as a health/fitness major in our kinesiology program, but changed to molecular biology. I actually find cellular bio quite interesting. I mainly did to consolidate the number of classes I would have to take over the "x" amount of years, but it's a good program at my school. When I first had to take chem I was kind of dreading it because I hated it so much in high school, but it's grown on me.

To the OP, I remember looking at an organic book a few years ago at the hospital I was working at and one of the MD's was like "Organic?!?!?! I hated organic, I barely even remember that crap." Needless to say I was shocked and relieved at the same time 'cause I couldn't stand organic as well. IT was the only class where I would be thinking I did great on a test and come back with a D or something. Needless to say I was happy with my B.

The other poster was right, prereqs are just weed-outs. Get through them and be glad they're done. I'm so glad I majored in something other than bio...

I loved 1st semester gen chem and physics though, 2nd semester, not so much.

hey orthomodel, thank you for your input. I feel a lot more motivated. Upto this point I've felt like I was the only one that hated some of these subjects...which I thought was not how a pre-med should feel.

ha so sorry to hear your pre-med advisor is alive.
