Do these courses count for prereqs??

I am trying to satisfy the biology requirement for medical school. I have one semester of general biology completed right now. To complete a year of biology I need one more class.

I am registered for an upper division human anatomy with lab course worth 5 units. Will this complete that requirement?

Also there is a Survey of biochemistry and molecular biology class available. What do you think of this one?

The anatomy + lab should work. The other would be a good class, but if it doesn't have a lab component, it probably wouldn't fulfill that requirement.

Can anyone tell me if stats is included in sGPA? Thanks in advance...

Stats is a math course, so it would be included in your science gpa for allopathic medical schools.

Thank you for your response. I hope the anatomy will satisfy the requirement. I have been trying to get in touch with schools to find out exactly but so far nobody has been available to take my call.

I have one more question. I am looking to apply during the 2010-2011 application cycle. Is it possible to apply to schools while still having one class to take to satisfy requirements? For example, if the anatomy class does not satisfy my biology req, can I take the appropriate biology class in the Fall of my application year?

Yes, you just need to have all the prerequisites completed by the time you matriculate.

Thank you for your response. I greatly appreciate it.

My counselors at school are horrible and don't have any idea what they're doing. It's hard trying to navigate yourself through the application procedure.

Again, thank you all.

I have found that most advisors have NO IDEA what is going on and you are always better off asking others who have been through the process or going on the med schools websites/ calling them.

Yes, they are pretty much useless. I figured out my own scheduling plan throughout college when I was Freshman. I researched all requirements for my major and never went to my major advisor. I don't want to completely trust someone else with my future. I'd rather take some things into my own hands so I know it is the correct thing and I would have nobody to blame but myself.

Well UCSD doesnt require lab work... 😀

But on the flipp side, I think this question is VERY school dependent, I have contacted several schools with the same question and got varied responses.
Not to mention failing to take the second semester of "general" biology may make you ill prepared for the MCAT.

Think.Do and Prosper. God speed young skywalker.

Yeah how does UCSD get away with that?!

I'm hoping I'll take my second semester of general biology during Spring 2010 semester so I will be prepared for the MCAT in the Summer 2010, though right now I almost feel like I should postpone the MCAT until the next year, which would alson delay med school apps until the next year. I just don't want to rush and cram whatever prereqs I have left into this year. It's definitely a challenge being a non-science major.
