Hi,

1) I just wanted to know if they teach in English in Puerto Rico optometry school. I don't speak Spanish at all and think of this Puerto Rico school as my last resort.

2) Anyway, is overall GPA more important then the Science GPA ? My science Gpa is like 2.78 but my overall GPA is like 3.03 , So is my GPA good enough to get me into ANY optometry school in America ? and I haven't taken OAT yet.

3) And alot of people keep saying on the forum that Extra Curriculum activities are very important. I am part of a club in my university, So do optometry schools ask for a proof of all the clubs we have been to and what is that proof ?

4) I have done 45 hours of general volunteer work at a hospital, so do I need a written proof of it to show to optometry school and are 45 hours enough ?

5) I have done some volunteering at an optometrist's office and he is going to write me a recommendation letter. how many hours do optometry schools require for volunteer work with the optometrist ?

6) Is there any other extracurricular activity that I have to do ?

What is your OaT score?

From what I gathered from researching the school, classes are taught in english, but they do require you to have a good grasp of spanish and/or take a crash spanish course because the people you will work with in clinic are spanish speakers. There is no correct formula for ec's, the best advice is to do what fits you, and quality over quantity. As for shadowing experience, it varies, and the best proof is to get those doctors that you were able to form a "relationship" with to write your lor's. They will know what you have really done based on your apparent knowledge demonstrated in your application and interview. I wish you the best of luck, but i don't think you should "settle" on an optometry school. This is 4 years that require hard work, and dictate your future. Unless you are truly happy, there is nothing wrong with holding out until next year. Good Luck! :luck:

I am a first year student down here at IAUPR and they have a Spanish course for non speaking spanish students. The course is for 4 semesters to get you ready for clinic. Good Luck...
