They are the elite of all medical schools. I know people who've matriculated to these institutions, all have been from other elite schools. Is it safe to say that a few bad decisions made during your freshman and sophomore years of high school will damn you to never attaining your goals of graduating from a top 10 because the undergrad school you got stuck with isn't up to par?

Or does over-achieving in these institutions in addition to high MCAT scores result in acceptances to the best of the best medical schools?

In one of your previous threads, you complained about those who go above and beyond with their ECs, namely shadowing. These are the students who are more likely to get into a top school. Remember that medical school isn't like law school. We aren't overly concerned with rankings (for the most part). An MD is an MD and can open a lot of doors. Law students MUST go to a top tier law school because of the oversaturation of the market. You can still be a successful neurosurgeon/cardiothoracic surgeon if you're accepted into a state supported MD school (this is my point).

Yes they do.. If you look at the incoming classes for top 10 schools, some have over 50 schools represented. While there are definitely a lot of people in my school that are from 'big name' institutions for their undergrad, there are definitely some people (like myself) who are not from a top 30 university for undergrad

also, check mdapps out and you will see for yourself

"At this rate, I probably won't even get into Vassar."
"I've had JUST ABOUT ENOUGH OF YOUR VASSAR-BASHING, YOUNG LADY!"

A student a few years ago from Stony Brook got into Duke and U of Michigan. It should go without saying that you'll need the appropriate credentials to get into a top 10, but your fate is not set in stone.

Yes but it's harder. Top med schools like to import students from top undergrads. If you're at a no-name undergrad with awesome GPA and EC's you're essentially a big fish in a small pond (ie - less competition). You're going to have to dominate your MCAT and write tear jerking essays and you still might be passed over for a guy who went to a top place.

btw why are these threads so popular in the past couple days?

i've made terrible decisions from high school all the way through college, but i made out ok.

you must be new around here. the cafeteria is downstairs around the corner and the bathroom is immediately over that window over there.

No. The only way to get into a Top 10 Medical school is to have over 9000 hours of shadowing and graduate with a 4.0 from Harvard and be a Rhodes Scholar while volunteering in a remote Darfur refuge camp every summer where you struggle to rescue dying babies and orphans in the midst of gunfire and attacks by random rebel groups. It's also next to impossible to get in unless you score a 45T on your MCAT so be especially sure to brush up on your Verbal since that's usually killer. Did I remember to mention that the Top 10 med schools only accept kids who have won the Nobel award for their research (in addition to the above)?

i know this is hard for you to fathom, but posting on a forum doesn't take as much time or brainpower for the rest of us.

no they don't. you are obviously a lesser form of human being if you don't go to a top ten school so they would never accept you.

Hey, I don't know what these others people are talking about. Advice like yours provides the backbone for this forum. Will you personally advise me for this application cycle?

Well, I could be wrong but I believe students from outside of top 30 undergrads cannot even apply to medical school. I've also heard that medical students from schools outside the top 10 must take extra examinations to become licensed providers (the mythical "Step 4" USMLE exam taken in PGY4 that focuses almost exclusively on topics in organic chemistry).

Nicely done on being ambiguous enough to make me believe you weren't kidding. One gold star for you.

I'm surprised you were fooled, I guess the sarcasm was a tad too weak--there's always next time.

Let's relax people. Enjoy this comic.

To answer the OP's question, yes, top 10s do take people from all sorts of places. A strong applicant is a strong applicant, regardless of where he or she goes to undergrad.

In other news...

aaahahaha
I lol'ed. Then cringed.

Don't mistake flatearth's posts for legitimate advice

And lol'ed again.

And again.

To OP, Yes. I go to a decent university (avatar) and I personally know 3 people who will be matriculating into Harvard Medical School this fall.

No offense, but on the low resolution of my laptop, your university looks like an angular cactus.

Top schools are heavily represented on the interview trail, but you'll see the other lesser known schools too. I personally think going to a top school can only give you an edge, but there's no disadvantage going to a less prestigious school. I doubt everyone on the admissions committee went to top 10 schools, and the reason why classes are usually diverse is because the admissions committee choosing them is too.

Lol. Yeah, it's a new species. These cacti grow 535 feet tall.
