DO vs Dental

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No idea but out of the three (DO, MD, DDS/DMD) dentistry is the clear winner, so it doesnt really matter which is harder to get into. Unless youre just asking out of intellectual curiosity, then I still have no idea.

Agreed.

Read that whole thread. WT actual F?
1. It doesn't matter
2. We don't have grade replacement
3. Who cares?
4. DO school, not dental school, is a backup for MD school applicants who were not competitive for MD.
5.Couldn't care less.
6. Vet school is the most competitive.

It was basically a dental bashing thread...

That's so sick, looks like an amazing school! What made you consider it over MWU?
Honestly, it's ineffable. I really liked both schools (was really surprised by MWU). Pitt, however, has a tremendous reputation and it would be easier on my family to move there. Plus, maybe a little ego as Pitt is a very prestigious public school.

Also, I bought this nifty fridge magnet and I don't want it to go to waste

That thread made me sad. Especially the individual who said medical doctors are "worth more" to society that dentists, therefore attract more applicants. (Idiotic statement).

That person, right there, will be a future healthcare provider, folks.

I have a pre-med friend who once said if he doesn't get into an MD school, he'll settle for a DO school, but at least it's better than dental school. He then proceeded to say that pre-dental students are pre-med rejects. I'm ashamed of this, but I turned full hulk mode on him and pointed out that his stats are much lower than the accepted stats of our state's dental schools. Like I said, not proud of this, but what he said was extremely offensive.

What really ticks me off the most is the widely accepted idea that there could not be any pre-health student who would actually WANT to be a dentist as a first preference. Apparently it's medical school or you're stupid. God forbid should you want to pursue dentistry...

Welllll the majority of them won't get their specialty of choice and will end up working longer hours to make less money than us, so the jokes on them. Congrats on their undergrad GPAs and "surviving" the MCAT though, I guess.

Some people are just dense.

TBH guys i wasn't dental bashing. you just need to understand that you guys, pre-dental sdn'ers, are probably the smart ones in dental schools going to top schools. There are some pretty dumb people going to dental school...

Aside from the bottom 10 or so DO schools, nobody is dumb.

and yes, the "worth more" thing was bad taste, im sorry, but that's just my opinion. We all have our biases but not everyone voices there. I shouldn't have i'm sorry

It took me an hour to put this together (even more respect for doc toothache). It's not perfect but it's what I've got. I am x-posting this from the pre-DO board, where I originally posted it:

Because I was accepted into 2 dental schools at universities, which also house medical schools, on the first round of admissions, we'll use those 2 for references to compare some stats:
University of Pittsburgh:
Dental School (DMD) average matriculating GPA: 3.63 / DAT: 21 (95.0 percentile)/ admission % (applicants/matriculants): 79/2289 = 3.45%
Medical School (MD) average matriculating GPA: 3.85 / MCAT: 36 (97.1 percentile) / admission % (applicants/matriculants): 148/5534 = 2.67%
Midwestern University - Arizona Campus:
Dental School (DMD) average matriculating GPA: 3.56 / DAT: 19 (80.5 percenitle) / admission % (applicants/matriculants): 110/2658 = 4.14%
Medical School (DO) average matriculating GPA: 3.51 / MCAT: 28 (66.8 percentile) / admission % (applicants/matriculants): 256/3746 = 6.83%

This. this is the problem. In this whole thread, you don't see MD = DO. Not that they are, but at the top half of DO schools, you're pretty damn close to lower tier MD. I already respected top dental schools (if you care too look at the dental forum where dipdoc posted another thread about this). The fact is that I did not get in and settled for DO. That statement is correct. But that proves NOTHING. i could also point out the fact is that most dental students "settled" for dental school as opposed to medical school. these are all just Conjectures.

EDIT: You will probably argue that compareing two diifferent professions does not hold the same weight as md vs do in the last sentence I wrote. My rebuttal: go outside of SDN and look around, ask around, become more realistic. Anecdotal or whatever, but I know many many people who choose DDS/DMD, PA, nursing, MD/DO, Optometry based on their interests AND the professions level of difficulty to gain admission. I personally know a couple of Pre-dental who claimed pre-med until later in college and "suddenly" decided dentistry interested them more. Not saying that is anyone here, but you'd be surprised at the average aspiring pre-med. DO is becoming more and more like MD, and that means, less people care about the initials.

TLDR Bottom line: it's all about self selection, for which in todays world, DO gains a higher caliber than dentistry.

Seriously, what is your problem.

Aside from the bottom 10 or so DO schools, nobody is dumb.

lol talk about biases, I would let you know that I have at least 5-6 friends who got into DO schools with 23-25 range MCAT and their GPA are within the 3.3-3.45 ranges. They all got into great DO programs. And good for them.

Also, if I were to bash DO schools, most of the curriculum are didactics and little to none interaction with real patients until you get into residencies. I was shocked when I went on an orientation at West Virginia where the DO students practiced on each other because they cannot have real patients (I was once interested in DO schools). Well guess what? dental schools have both didactics and clinical experience wrapped in 4 years. We see real patients during clinical years. We can go into practice after 4 years of dental school (after all the boards, licensure, etc.) and we will be laughing when you are still in residencies (IF you even get matched). If dumb people can graduate before you, what does that make you?

But my point is: Every program has their pros and cons. Why can't you just find the one that fits you the best instead of putting down people that don't have the same choice as you?

Also, my sincere apologies if any of the DO students see this and feel offended, I had to make a point.

WVSOM is one of the lowest DO schools, good example..Care to see Touro or Western?
Virtually all DO students match (something like 95% +. Please know your facts about DO if you're going to make these points.

You've got to be one of the worst/most ignorant dudes I've had the displeasure of listening to. You type like you're on AOL instant messenger with your lack of punctuation and capitalization. There are PLENTY of "dumb" people in DO school, let alone any type of program. A level of intelligence is all relative, and GPAs and standardize test scores aren't the only measures of one's competence. For example, at one of my dental interviews I was unfortunate enough to sit down next to someone interviewing for the school's DO program. He was wearing khakis, a half-buttoned polo and Sperrys... like did he think he was Jake from State Farm?? It hurt me to try and hold a conversation with this clear bro who thought he was attending his first frat meeting. Speaking with pretension and ignorance like you have in the previous threads, this DO was most definitely not of higher caliber than the dental applicants sitting beside him.

@predental75

I think it's safe to say that person is a troll (and I shamefully admit to being pulled in). Let's end this thread now.

Which school. Also 1) that had nothing to do with his intelligence, he couldve gotten a 30+ you don't know don't judge

FYI i dont give two ****s about punctuation/capitalization Idc if it bothers you

@TheBoiii , exactly my point, I'm only saying that from my point of perspective. You have your ignorance and biases, I have mine. I apologize profusely if they hurt your feelings. Truce? 😉

@TheBoiii,
*Why* are you so desperate to prove DO's supposed superiority that you're continuing this thread in the predental forum? Why the need to keep insisting you're right about something subjective and personal?

Seriously. It's been entertaining, but people have different opinions. You've said your perspective, and we're gonna disagree. Chill.

(Also, FYI: Predent was arguing that intelligence/smarts is more than a number or a test score, and that competency is what matters. Predent wrote "test scores aren't the only measures of one's competence", and then gave an example of an incompetent DO who was ignorant and pretentious and probably won't have good bedside manners as a healthcare professional. It's more than just scores; people score high on the MCATs/DATs and then fail to get in to school because socially they're as appealing as a crusty gym sock.)

Dont feed the trolls boys. Look at the date the account was created.

Why i am i the troll...dipdoc said some offensive/questionable things as well...and made his account the same time...

Can we all just chill.

We're all respected professionals, and we'll direct out anger towards...Caribbean medical students! sound good?

that...was...clearly...a joke..
