Hello, I'm applying this cycle and have been placed on the waitlist at several schools. I'm wondering whether it's necessary to send in updates (like new grades) to be considered to get off the list? I know this is true at Georgetown, but how how about other schools?

You could ask each school that waitlists you. When waitlist movement begins (usually after March 15 and more intensely after May 15), a school wants to fill a seat and protect its yield by making an offer that will be accepted, and not make 5 phone call/offers to fill one seat. So, who are they going to call? If they aren't hamstrung with a ranked waitlist, they are going to call someone who they are relatively sure will say "yes" and that is often someone who has recently expressed a continued interest in the school.

Thanks for your answer, LizzyM!
