Do we practice on other students?? You know local Anesthesia

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I for one will stand in as pincushion for anyone in my class who doesn't want to get stuck. Been pierced and stretched enough to the point where it doesn't even phase me 🙂

Anyone else had the weird experience of people with multiple facial piercings being afraid of needles? I saw this happen at the practice I work at, and apparently it's happened before!

Just be glad you're not in med school. The male students have everyone practice prostate exams on them and the female students have to let everyone practice pelvic exams.
  i am going to apply to medical school instead of dental.

Sweet. (lmao)

My friend is a midwifery student and I'm going to let her practice exams on me. Weird? LOL

Medical ethics question here: I can totally understand the logic and usefulness behind practicing on each other, but isn't a main lesson in dentistry to be as conservative as possible with pain (or any sort of procedure)? Isn't it medically unethical to give an unnecessary injection?

There ARE some possible complications resulting from even a 30g needle (reactions to epi, etc. etc.). Could a student opt out not from fear of the injection, but because he/she doesn't feel right accepting an unnecessary procedure?
I'm sure you could raise a big fuss and not get stuck. But the risks are very small...mainly an intraarterial injection. Trying to get out of it remind me of the crazy moms who refuse to get their kids vaccinated and ride on the vaccinations of all the other kids. Not to mention that fact that you will develop a "reputation" among the faculty which goes far and wide in dental school and affects your grades more than you can imagine. But that may not matter to some people.

Damn. you're good. I stabbed myself twice using butterfly while drawing my own blood for the first time. 😀 😀

Haha, I've totally seen this happen!!! I've seen people come in with enormous tattoos, 2g studs in their ears, septum piercings, etc. etc. etc. and are absolutely horrified at the thought of a tiny intraoral injection!!! 😀 Aah, the hilarity!

In dental school there is very little concern for treating people ethically and humanely. Not patients and definitely NOT students. 😀

I had a patient in dental school who was a freakin' PHLEBOTOMIST who was so scared that she had her primary MD prescribe her valium just so I could do some fillings. Geez.

I have a fear of whatever size needle and whatever it will be used for, i.e. tattoos, piercing, etc 😱
