Do you absolutely NEED to complete your Pre-requisites by application time?

This question has probably been asked ALOT, but I can't find anything blatant on it for some reason.

I'm a rising college freshman and I just tried to make an initial schedule for my next four undergraduate years. I was wondering, do I need to complete my Pre requisites by application season?

The reason why I'm asking this is because I plan on taking Algebra-Based College Physics(that's the correct pre-requisite for most dental schools, am I correct?) during my fourth year and that's during the time I submit my application for dental schools.

Would it be a problem if I did that?

If it's useful, I'm probably gonna apply to BU. NYU, Pittsburgh, Temple, Buffalo, Stony Brook, and obviously many more.

No. You need to have completed your prereqs by the time you matriculate, not by the time you apply.

 alright, sounds good. Also, do you happen to know if Biochemistry is going to become a required prerequisite? Thank you so much!

Depends on the school. If it isn't required, it's usually recommended though.

Just curious, why are you putting off physics until Senior year? That isn't the kind of class I'd want to deal with on top of the upper level stuff you'll be taking. I'm not saying physics is hard, but it can be a pain when you factor in the lab (that, at my university, was worthless).

What is a 'rising' college freshman?

Also, the answer is no...they don't need to be completed before application. Only before matriculation. I won't be taking physics until after the DAT since it is not on the DAT.

A good number of schools would like you to take biochemistry, I think you should take it along with anatomy, physiology, cell biology, microbiology and a semester of psych. That is my opinion, but those classes along with the standard pre-reqs should cover you for the vast majority of D schools.

Good luck sir.

I'd agree with this. Though, I'm most likely going to have to skip on anatomy.

My schedule is super tight to fit a science sequence in my other years(unless I do three sciences a semester). btw, I'm majoring in Fine Arts and minoring in Biology.

I'm taking General Bio I and II freshman year
General Chem I and II as well as Genetics and Cell Biology sophomore year
Orgo Chemistry I and II as well as Vertebrate Anatomy/Physiology Junior year.
Algebra Based College Physics as well as Microbiology Senior year.

I plan on taking the DAT exam the summer after Junior year, so in order not to conflict my info from physics into my studying, I thought it would be best to put it off until senior year.

It means that I'm becoming a freshman in the fall!

The problem is that after plugging in my fine arts major requirements, my biology minor requirements, and my core curriculum requirements, I legitimately cannot fit Biochemistry in my coursework.

Unless I substitute one of my classes to be taken over the summer, which is quite costly for me considering I am already sticking alot of the tuition in student loans, I really cant take it.

And I can't even use it towards my bio minor requirement either.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, you'll have a full plate. Just be sure that Biochem isn't a prerequisite for your school of choice. Would be a shame to miss an application cycle over one class.

Wow. If im reading correctly I may have just screwed myself like you said. I graduated with my degree in Cell/molec/developmental bio and have not taken 2 micro bio's. Ive taken 1 that I randomly just decided to take.. it was not required for my degree.🙁 I was under the impression that the coursework had to be done at the time of acceptance. Did I just complete my DAT/personal statement/LORs ahead of time for no reason? This is heartbreaking.

I don't think I understand exactly what you are asking. You say you haven't taken two microbiologies. That isn't a huge problem if the dental schools you apply to don't require it.

All that matters is that you have the prerequisites done before you matriculate. If you have a year between now and then (i.e., you are participating in the current application cycle), then you could still take any prerequisites you have left in the year before you start school.

I was planning to apply to UW as my #1. They require 2 microbiologies. I graduated last year (2010) with a degree in cellular, molecular, and developmental biology. My major did not require 2 microbios so I did not take both. I spent this past year volunteering for hundreds of hours, taking the DAT, getting 5 letters of rec, and finishing my personal statement. I havent been enrolled for a year now. Since I already graduated I can't go back and take classes.. so I guess that means I cant apply tomorrow?? 🙁 If this isnt the case please let me know..
