i'm new to this forum, so you may have already discussed...

do folks already have their research projects in mind before starting their joint programs? do many of you already have pubs?

i dont think you need to know what project you want to work on just yet. ive met mdphds who've switched labs/projects during their phd-research phase years. it might be a good idea to expose yourself to different fields now so you have a good, general idea about what field you'd like to end up in. dont feel locked into whatever you're doing now though. i worked on one project for a few summers, and got second authorship on a publication, but i don't necessarily feel obligated to continue it in grad school, or continue it during undergrad for that matter. it's fun to work in different labs/fields in undergrad, provided you have at least one or two solid, sustained "research experiences."

Many do, many switch. It's certainly not a requirement to know what you want to do, and even if you have to choose a department or first rotation when you start, you can always switch.

Some people have pubs, some don't. I don't have solid numbers on it. It's certainly not a requirement.
