I am talking specifically about the work that optometrist does i.e your patient interactions. Please don't bring up oversupply, commercialization, current salaries etc. I am asking for opinions on how you feel about your actual work, seeing patients and doing eye exams everyday.

Do you still enjoy giving eye exams?
Do you respect what you do?
Is it rewarding? Are you proud of what you do?
Do you feel like you are helping others see better or is it just a job for you?
Do patient appreciate what you do? Do they respect what you do?

Here are my answers to your questions........

Do you still enjoy giving eye exams?

Absolutely, it is neat to go into a day having the chance to see something new everyday. I have been practicing for 5 years and it is still as fun and exciting as when I first saw patients in Optometry School.

Do you respect what you do?

I think it is pretty amazing because we save patients' eyesight and sometimes even their life every week. There are times when our patients are not awestruck by what we do, but I think that is true of most healthcare providers.

Is it rewarding? Are you proud of what you do?

It is an awesome way to make a living. No 2 days are identical, and patients are always coming in with new problems/questions
.
Do you feel like you are helping others see better or is it just a job for you?

For me, it is a calling. As it was stated to me in my first year of OD school, "for some of us it is just a career, for others it is a way of life".

Do patient appreciate what you do? Do they respect what you do?

Patients responses fall across the whole gamut. Most appreciate it enough. A few here and there do not.

If you have any more questions please feel free to PM me.

Do you still enjoy giving eye exams?
Yes. This was the primary reason I became an eye doctor (OD) and so I enjoy giving eye exams.

Do you respect what you do?
Yes, I respect what I do. I help people to see.

Is it rewarding? Are you proud of what you do?
Yes, it is rewarding. The expression on someone's face after they were seeing blurry initially and I hold up lenses to make it become clear is very satisfying, even after the 10,000th time.

Do you feel like you are helping others see better or is it just a job for you?
Helping.

Do patient appreciate what you do? Do they respect what you do?
No they do not. I would say the majority do not respect it as they should. But that's just human beings in general; ungrateful.

Frankly I have not found much I liked it, but obviously, it seems that you enjoy.

I think a lot of the general public usually refers to going to see an OD as "going to the eye doctor" or making an appointment with the eye doctor. I thnk that's pretty good in general. Most people just refer to dentists as dentists and they are probably even less grateful when they need to go see one.

1) Most of the time. Sometimes it gets monotonous. I joke with myself sometimes that after 12 years of doing eye exams, I feel like you could be slapping me while I was giving the exam and I could do just as good a job.

2) Of course. Why would I not? I help people see better.

3) Yes. Of course.

4) Of course I'm helping people see better. That IS the job.

5) I think they appreciate it. They pay me and they usually leave my office seeing better than when they came in so I'm guessing they appreciate it.

As far as respect goes, that's one of those things an amorphous concepts that has little relevance. Sure, we'd all like to be "respected" but what does that mean, really?

Half the people don't respect the President. Half the people don't respect the president we had before this one and half won't respect the next one we have.

Half the people don't respect the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Billions of people don't respect the Pope.

Millions of people don't respect teachers.

So what is respect to you?
