I'd like to think I'm not the only pre-pharmacy/pharmacy student out there who gets really, really discouraged from time to time. Sometimes I just get tired and stuff...I do like many of the classes and I do find it interesting but sometimes , you know, it just gets a little old at times. Tis been a lot of work so far and I know that the work is going to increase more as time goes by.

Also sometimes I think, "wow, is this a good choice because its such a huge block of time/energy to spend on something...who will I be in four years??". I am kind of a commitment phobe...I'd feel the same way about spending four years in a foreign country or something.

Sometimes I am convinced I am on the right track and then sometimes I feel like I am surrounded by 360 degrees of uncharted woods.

So share your stories if you like. I know I'm not the only one who feels this way sometimes.

sometimes if I ever start thinking that way I say to myself.... well if I wasn't going this direction then what would I do. And I can never think of anything realistic I could do that I'd enjoy more than this field.

I ask myself that same question and come up with the same answer!

mmm yes pharmacy is a very realistic goal. We cannot all be famous authors or stage actors...

If you're afraid of making the wrong decision...I think once you come out with that degree you'll at least have the success and the options in front of you. I'm not even really pre-pharm yet...I only feel discouraged because I'm not sure if I can get accepted.

I hear you, same here. Every semester, I wonder if I am going to make it cuz I don't feel sometimes that I cut it. And had the doubt about career as pharmacy sometimes too. No one wants to do something they end up hating for the rest of their lives. But I've asked for advice from several close peeps, and the honest answer is most say you should just go ahead with pharmacy. Lots of people I know regret not going into this field cuz they hate their jobs and there's not much financial stability in their lives. At least with pharmacy, you know that you will get a job and good salary. You don't have to be passionate about being a pharmacist, just get the degree, and if you want to venture in other areas, you can try out those areas and still have something to fall back on....of course, if u r willing to take the risk and jump to another field cuz you can't stand pharmacy then well....that's a different story

Sometimes I get discouraged when I overhear how many people in my classes that want to apply to pharmacy school, but then I think, they cant all be applying to the same school or same year as me, and I dont even know their stats!

But usually my problems are self-defeating thoughts. Right now Im studying PCAT stuff going....ohmygodicantpossiblydoallthismathinmyhead and ifidontgeta99onthistestillnevergetintopharmacyschoolandthenlifewillsuckforever. Then I think you still have a few weeks to study and not getting a perfect score wont be the end of the world. 😀

LOL, word, i feel that way too as i'm studyin for PCAT's now. That's funny you have people in your class who want to apply to pharmacy school. I'm going to CUNY in NYC and apparently I'm the only one who is applying to pharmacy school in the school i'm going to. Everyone else is either Medical school or Physician Assistant or Dental, etc.

i know the feeling about how many people are applying to pharmacy school. it seems as if everywhere i turn, there is another person who is saying that they want to become a pharmacists. i know of at least two other people, besides myself, that were in one of the intro biology classes with me this past year. And it freaks me out because they have so much more experience in pharmacy than i do and they still have two more chances to apply. Also, i feel like some people are at an advantage because they knew what they wanted to major in before they entered college, whereas i changed majors quite a few times and made a few big jumps within my majors (try business-journalism to business-athletic training to business-physical therapy to business-prepharm to biology-prepharm; which is where i'm at now). i know that having a diverse background with studies is important, but i wish i knew what i wanted to do from the very beginning because i'd be so much more ahead of schedule with the pharm classes. btw.. all the people that i know that want to enter pharmacy school are applying this summer, just as i am. *SCARY!!!*

I used to think the same way about the number of people who were applying to pharmacy school for fall 2005. Even after my interview, I talked to this guy who interviewed at the same school at interviewed at, he sounded so confident about his interview. I could picture the admission commitee choosing him over me. Nevertheless, I got in. Just work hard , be confident and don't worry about competition, or else you will get discouraged.

yes, that is so true. Don't worry about the competition. If i had known from freshman year that i was going to apply to pharmacy school i would have been on pins and needles thewhole time.

I didn't realize how hard it was to get accepted until right up around my interview.

I used to feel the same way about hearing all the people in my classes who were applying talking about the process. If felt like everyone and his brother was applying!

I also agree with the people who say that no matter what if you go through pharmacy you have the means to get anywhere else you want to be.

Last night I was feeling so discouraged and I wanted to quit. I had an organic test yesterday morning and my professor had told us NOT to focus on nomenclature for the first exam, but to study functional groups and acid/base stuff. We get the exam yesterday and there were 10 nomenclature questions and NO acid/base! WTF??? Then he denied ever saying that! Plus my organic lab is so hard - there are 3 experiments every week and the writeups take hours. Yesterday I had lab and I had prepared the wrong pre-lab write up (six essay questions). I also have some kind of respiratory infection and developed a high fever in the afternoon.

Worst. Day. Ever.

This morning I woke up, no fever - felt better. I went to organic and got my test back - I made a 92. I talked to my lab TA and she gave me some tips on being organized and staying on top of the reports and paperwork.

So my point is - there are good days and bad days. I would be surprised if someone said they never get discouraged.

Hang in there, everyone!!!!

In my organic chem class last semester, we had about 15 people who actually finished the semester. At least five other people applied to the same pharmacy school I did! Three of us got in--50 percent's not bad...especially for a community college.

I started in Architecture. Played around with sociology/psychology. Was offered a scholarship in music performance (trombone). Got a degree in Photography, minored in philosophy. Now I'm going for Pharmacy. I see the trend in the last couple years has been the "Ph..." careers. Maybe I could crack a joke at the interview about that? How in the world can I explain those jumps?

I'd say about 50% or more of the people in my organic chemistry class are going into pharmacy and we are all going for the same two schools. It doesn't intimidate me at all because I am right up there with the top couple of geniuses in our class. I know this is what I want and I have a drive that can't be denied.

Believe in yourself and everything will fall into place.

I find the easiest way to minimize the stress of applying and dealing with everything is to not focus on the big picture. Break things down into managable steps. As an undergrad I almost never thought of the PCAT or interviews. All I could do was focus on grades, take the right classes, and get some experience. I knew I was able to do that, and I knew that as long as I stayed on track I would be good. Once the PCAT came along I didnt worry about the test, I worried about studying because that is all I could do about the test. My only problem was the interview because I knew I had very little control over what was gonna happen.

Anyways, the long-winded point is to just take things one day at a time and not get ahead of yourself. If you can't control something, don't worry about it because that wont help. If you can control something, then be sure to do something about it.

Good luck to all. Breathe deep.

which CUNY are you currently attending, i feel that way at my school too, people look at me like i have horns growing outta my head when i tell them i want to go to pharm school, 99% of them never heard of a pharm D. I did however met two people at my school who was going for it too....

Oh as for the OP's question, ooooohhhh yes i ALWAYS feel discouraged, ALWAYS feel like quiting, and ALWAYS feel like i'm making a HUGE mistake, then i get over it for a few minutes and then it starts all over again, i guess thats life..

.

I also agree with this. If you break anything down into steps it is much easier to tackle .

I am feeling somewhat less discouraged today.

I don't think there is anything else I'd rather get a doctorate in. I certainly wouldnt want one in a liberal arts area because I couldn't stand writing all the silly term papers (even though sometimes i wish i had gone the easy jobless route of english)

I wouldnt want to major in business. nor straight biology. nor med school. nor engineering. nor psychology.

At the moment, I'm going to Hunter, r u attending CUNY as well?
Yeah I know, I get that same reaction esp. from the school's premed adviser, who told me he didn't really know what advice to give me as I was the only student so far that he has met in Hunter who is pursuing PharmD. In fact, he told me to keep him up to date on how the whole prepharmacy process goes......great
