Hey everyone,

I am going to be an MSI this fall, and am trying to decide between two places to live. I can live with two second year students, or a house with 3 other first year students. Does anyone have an opinion on whether it is better to live with second years vs. first years? The price is almost the same for both, so that really isn't an issue. I was just looking for any input. I didn't know if living with first years would be better because everyone is going through the same thing, or if it would be better to live with second years to get away from it for a bit?

Thanks 🙂

I think it would somewhat depend on how you study. If you are a self-studier, living with second years might help. If you think you'd like to study in a group, living with first years might be a better option.

Living with second years might be useful because they may act as a "mentor" to help you out. Living with first years might be useful because they are doing what you are doing and have it all fresh in their minds.

Which group of students do you get along better with? That would always be my #1 as I have had some really great roommate situations (turned out to be my best friends) and some really bad ones (they got evicted and one ended up with a criminal charge).

Come on guys, help a brother out. I didn't know everyone on SDN was married, living with their spouse, and had no input on the issue. I am trying to decide between these two places relatively quickly, and ANY thoughts are appreciated.

I lived with 3 other first years last year (my first year) and I think it was a great experience. You're probably more likely to be spending free time with other first years, so you may as well live with and get to know some really well. My roommates are now some of my best friends in med school - and I would have found it frustrating to get to know 2nd years for a year only to have them disappear on rotations the following year. Plus, assuming you all get along you can live together in future years too.

So, my vote is to live with first years. When exam time rolls around, life gets stressful no matter who you live with. At least if you're living with first years, you'll all be studying at the same times, so you wont have the distraction of your roommates partying or doing other distracting things when you want to study.

Thanks for the input. That is what I thought. It seems like living with some other first years is a good way to get to know other first years, and living with second years may isolate you from your class a bit.
