Do you have time for the gym/sports during med school?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There is time, but you have to sacrifice from other areas, i.e. cut down TV time for workout time.
I have classmates that have run a marathon or two in MS1. Anything is possible if you really work for it.

If yes, how much time do you have for it? thanks a lot.

Yes. I usually go 3-4 times per week for about an hour and fifteen minutes.

I could go more if I wanted. Medical school is all about time management and prioritizing.

Hope that helps.

Just skip your classes and you'll have all the time in the world to study and lift.

yes----do it instead spending all that time eating that crap you eat

Get up early in the morning and get to the gym then. There are less people than in the evening. Plus, it is a great start to the day and I don't feel as guilty about spending that time on myself. Or, bring your notes with you for when you are on the treadmill/bike/etc.

You have to work hard at balancing your time, but you can do it.

After completing my second year of med school, I have found that the more you are in school, the more time you discover to workout, etc. My first year, I didnt work out near as much as I did this year. The first year, I was caught up in thinking I had to learn every detail. Then I figured out that I didn't have to do that.

It seemed that the more tests and such I had, the more I wanted to be in the gym. I think I worked out about 5 times a week at least while studying for boards.

My advice is this: when you come to med school, pick out around three things that you will not give up when you get here. Mine were my wife and kids, working out and watching ER and Scrubs every week. I would have a final on Friday morning at 8 am but I would take an hour study break on Thursday night to watch ER.

That is my 2 cents!

Chris

Yes...you will find the time. It's especially nice if there's a gym in your apt building or at the school.

If you've never been one to do weight training / cardio in the mornings, medical school is surely not the time to try. You'll crash and burn real quickly. Sleep is way too valuable considering the stress that our mind and body endure daily just from studying, etc. The evenings aren't that crowded at all... if *you* are the crowd. Find someone to go with you. Don't miss any days at the beginning of the year or you'll be talking yourself out of workouts every other day. You can go over notes while you're training, but why not just make that an hour to think about other things, or talk about your day with a buddy. Good luck.

I've never been one to train in the mornings, but I have taken the time before school started back up to retrain my body. I'm not saying that you MUST follow what i say. Every person is different. What I posted is what currently works for me. I make sure to get plenty of sleep. We are in class for 8 hours a day, and by 5 pm i'm too tired to work out. 5 AM works much better for me.

No matter who you are, if you want to find the time to work out, you will. But it is an effort to schedule it in at times.

Best of luck
