I helped my doctor and PA finish a case report and now they told me to submit it. There’s a publication fee and I’m not sure how to bring it up. If I have to pay for it I might not submit it. Any advice on how to approach them?

Note: next Wednesday is my last day at the job because I will be starting school in a couple weeks.

Is this a private office or is it a part of a larger medical system?

Also did the doc tell you which journal to submit to? They might not be aware of the fee.

It is a big private office. I did ask the doctor which journal he prefers and he said JAMA and Journal of Orthopaedic Research.

Ask. They’re likely having you submit to help you, not to shirk the bill.

There are journals that publish student articles for free. I think Cureus is one.

Ok, do you know this doctor well? I would just bring it up. They might not have realized there was a fee. It's very possible these are just the journals that they read so they were like hey what about these journals.

Since you know what journals he wants, tell him the fee is $X and who in his office you need to contact so they can make payment. Don't even make this as something optional or that you're asking them for a favor by paying
