i've been wondering about this for a while now... is there anywhere on AMCAS where you have to specify your parents income? can having rich parents hurt your chances at getting into med school?

i'm worried that my parents income could hurt my chances at getting into mercer (which has an emphasis on the underserved and disadvantaged)

You don't have anything to worry about if its just parents' salary. And I think you have a few misconceptions about Mercer, too. Get on the GA thread once in awhile and you'll get more responses. I was accepted to Mercer this past December. They don't care a whole lot if you are disadvantaged or not. They care if the community you came from is underserved. This means if you don't come from Atlanta, you have a better shot at getting in. I don't know where you are from, but plenty of people from ATL do get in, but it is far less than the number at Emory or MCG.

About your specific question: no, you don't have to list your parents' salaries on the AMCAS. That will not have any impact on your application unless your family was very poor. Having a rich family doesn't matter much. It will matter with financial aid, but not with acceptance.

Any other questions?

There is an optional section on the AMCAS (almost everyone completes it although it is optional) that asks your parents' names, their county (or country) of residence, alma mater, occupation and whether they are alive. From this one can make a guestimate of family income but it is only a guess.

There is an optional section called "disadvantaged" that very few people complete. This is for people who had childhoods (age 0-18) that put them at a disadvantage due to lack of medical providers, poverty, etc. The disadvantaged section does have a family income question.

Having rich parents will not effect you gaining admissions to Mercer. The only time they care about your parents income is when you gain acceptance. They then use that information to determine how to divide the need based scholarships that they have. And since you are rich, or so you claim, you will not be eligible for these particular awards. But you won't need them so its all good.

hmmm hmm hmmm.. how DOES the other half live?

i've been out of college for a year and i'm a broke college kid paying to take postbacc classes.. i think i just misheard somewhere that they considered your "socioeconomic status" and that parents income was on AMCAS.
