can someone clear this up for me?

i've heard that people get accepted to pharmacy school without a degree, but that they must have the pre-reqs. what are the pre-reqs for pharmacy?

and how much of an advantage is it to have a degree?

thanks

I am not an expert by any means but I will offer my advice. The pre-reqs are just the classes that you have to take before you can apply to pharmacy school. The pre-req's vary by school. No schools currently require you to have a degree before you apply, although some schools highly recommend it. I understand that pharmacy schools in california are more competitive and prefer applicants to have a degree. Just out of curiousity what schools are you considering?

actually, it's not for me, i'm applying to dental schools. but i want some info for a friend of mine. he's just starting out. he's currently doing his first year of getting a business degree.

do pharm schools SERIOUSLY consider applicants that have had a relativly 'bad' first 4 years of CC work. I think he is making a transition, and wants this real bad.

btw - thanks for the post!

what is his gpa?

i don't know, but my guess would be not that good as in he REALLY messed up, but i just wanna know 'worst case scenerio' anyways.

my question is, if he made straight A's in all pre-reqs and whatever he is doing now, and tied that up with a neat Personal Statement talking about a life transition in his goals in life, bla bla bla

what are the chances,

gpa maybe between 1.0-2.0 (this may not be true, but with F's and D's, it might be)

but he is capable for sure, so what do you think?

and could you direct me to some sources for wanting to start on pre-pharm course,

again, i appreciate you posts for me,

thanks!

he need's to decide what schools he is interested in applying to and finding out what their pre-req requirements are. pharmcas's website is a good place to look at school info. on their site you can look at info about each school like what their pre-reqs are etc... then he needs to start taking the courses at a local college. I don't know what the policy is for other schools but some of the schools I am applying to look at only the highest grade if you retake a class. So he may want to retake some classes to pull up his gpa. Then closer to application time he needs to take the pcat. maybe if he pulls up his gpa and scores well on the pcat he may have a chance.

It really depends on the school. He'll need to find one that grants grade forgiveness. My school just averaged the attempts. He'll need a math/science GPA of at least 3.0. Having a degree will make him more competitive, which he may need with all the F's and D's on his record.

For coursework, you have to find out the specifics from each school. Common courses will be Gen Chem I & II w/labs, Org Chem I & II w/labs, at least 1 year of biology, physics, calculus. Pretty much the same coursework as premed.

basically, i'm just looking for a few sites that can help me give advice to my friend on pharmacy. i just want some general information, and stuff like that. i know the pre-dent stuff inside out, but i'm clueless on how to go from university to pharm school. could someone guide me somewhere?

for example, physics is not on the DAT, but is required for every dental school, is there anything like this for pharmacy? and if so, where can i get the information from? i can't seem to find any decent web sites that lays down the process.

Again, thanks for any help.

First of all ask ur friend if he is considering in state or out-of-state pharmacy colleges...

then go to AACP.org website and there is a link that says pharmacy schools....click on there and choose hich ever state he wants to go to...

here's the link:

http://www.aacp.org/issi/membership/schools.asp?action=view&TRACKID=&wh=A&CID=593&DID=4224

then they will show all pharmacy school's website for that partiular state....so just click on the particular school's website and seewhat r their requirements and pre-reqs......wethere PCAT is a must or not....

Another thing is ...GPA of 1.0-2.0 is really not good enough to apply to pharmacy school.....unless he takes all of the pre-reqs again and try to shoot for all A's and B's.........

Hope this help..... 🙂

i thought the min for most schools was like a 2.5 or 2.8

Yes...the minimum might be 2.5 or 2.8, but having a minimum GPA is not enough/ rather competitive......

I would say in order to be a competitive applican't one must have atleast 3.5 or better GPA

i wasn't necessarly referring to you on that one...

i think there is a reason for a min GPA to be that low, and my reasoning:

an applicant may have completlely disregarded his first 2 years of CC and/or University course work, and therefore HAD to make All A's to just hit the miniumum.

If an applicant has two years of pre-pharm course work, and nails his PCATs, and writes a top P. Statement about his transition in School, and creates the complete cinderalla story, then would't that become competitive?

I don't want you to just say yes, but be honest.
