Do you need to have all of your SLOR's submitted before invited to interview?

Due to the fact that EM is pretty popular at my school, I will not be able to finish my first EM rotation (and therefore get my first SLOR) until September 7th.

For my second SLOR, I have two options:

1. I can do another different EM rotation at my home school (and therefore a different SLOR) and have that finished by September 28th.

OR

2. I can do an away rotation, but will not have finished that rotation (and therefore not have a SLOR) until October 14th.

What do you guys think I should do?

Will I be invited to less interviews because my SLOR's submitted are not submitted to ERAS?

This is of interest to me too (or will be in a year) since I won't be able to do my home EM rotation til August and my away will have to be in October.

According to my reading of the NRMP program director's survey (p.36), 75% of EM programs had half or more of their interview slots open as of November 1, which seems encouraging.

I know there has been a lot of discussion of this issue in older threads, but I don't know where they are right now.

Apparently EM is gaining in popularity, our school has a similar problem. The first three month of EM at our two hospitals are reserved for students likely going into EM, however there were more interested students than spots this year.

The post office opens in early Sept.Technically, programs are not supposed to be interviewing before the Nov 1st dean's letter release date. However, many of us make offers to interview after Nov 1 before that date. Thus we may have given out half of our interviews by the time the Dean's letter is out. None of us will expect that everyone will be able to have all of the apps done quickly, but some use a filter like MLE 1, transcript and 1 letter (or 2 letters) to pull out the apps that are ready to review. It's probably to your advantage to have 1 SLOR available by Oct 15. Two would be gravy.

I would do an away rotation rather than a second month at your home program - it shows that unbiased people like you as well. Plus, if you get on the ball you may be able to squeeze into an away rotation prior to your EM home month and thereby get 2 SLORs by the end of September. Also remember that it will take some time for whoever is writing your SLOR to turn it around so don't plan on having your SLOR done by Sept 7.

An away rotation is going to have greater value. Most invites start going out Nov 1st. (this corresponds with the release of the Dean's letter). You should stay on top of you SLOR's. Let the writers know that you will want a SLOR from the rotation at the beginning (this way they have some idea and can prep for it). Generally, SLOR's take a while to write and knowing ahead of time allows for busy academic EP's to schedule time to write your SLOR.

EM SLOR's are the most important but your schedule is fine.
