I'm not talking about typing notes on a computer, I mean actually writing them with a stylus on a tablet using an app like Evernote. Do you retain the information? I think it would be more efficient doing it this way, but I feel like it would be kind of hard to learn a new way of taking notes. I don't want to sacrifice comprehension, either, because I heard taking notes with a pencil and paper helps you retain information better than writing them on a tablet.

This is a personal choice. Have you tried taking notes with a tablet? For me, pencil and paper seems to embed things better than using a stylus, and I’m also more comfortable with the interface. However, my pen and paper notes get lost pretty easily, so I usually type them up to save on OneNote after I’ve written everything out.

I started off using my surface book to take notes on but I eventually switched back to old fashioned hand written notes. I just like pen and paper better and I feel like I retain more. However, I think most people in my class still use their tablets.

I think the real advantage of taking notes on a tablet is that you can annotate directly on slides/diagrams vs having to print it out.

I prefer paper and pencil, but with med school... i had hundreds of pages of notes to print out a week, so I switched to my ipad and pencil. I don’t feel like it was much different for me than real paper.

I strongly prefer pencil and paper, but that is because Iike the physicality of it. I don't believe it is better for comprehension. You're doing the exact same thing! These days it is trivial to convert handwritten notes to pdf form so just use whichever you like more.
