I was just curious about what others think about doing this?

And I don't mean thanking profs for writing LOR's/asking for a LOR or for giving a mark that you didn't necessarily deserve.

Wether you developed a good relationship with the professor and they went out of their way to help you beyond what would normally be expected, or you just want to thank them for an enjoyable semester in their class.

Do you do this?

I just thank them and maybe shake their hand when I turn in my final. These people get way too many emails and I don't want to clog it up even more.

I guess if they really helped me in some way but for normal professors, nope.

I personally thank professors that I thought did an excellent job with the course and who I got to know personally over the course of the semester.

I've done it after I received my final grade, so that it wouldn't look disingenuous or that I was trying to suck up.

If I feel they were great professors or TAs, then after my final I'll walk up to them and shake their hands and/or tell them thanks and that I enjoyed the class.

Yeah, just do it person. An email is a little bit much.

A handshake and a smile after the final exam is all they get from me. Unless they were absolutely amazing at their job.

I have once or twice. But usually it's just a handshake and a thank you after finals.

Unless I already had an excellent relationship to the professor prior to that moment, probably not.

Um....no....I just said thank you and I hope you have a wonderful holiday lol

The handshake and thank you is the route I would go, but that's more so with the professors I have developed some kind of relation with and the class was really good. To give you an idea, the professors that I do thank for the class experience are the ones that ask me to keep them up to date on my progress of my future career. Meaning they have actually gotten to know me (and vise versa) and what my goals are in life. Of course these are not the norm but happen 🙂

Imagine teaching 400 intro chem students, and then receiving 400 thank you emails after the course ended.

I'd go with the handshake and a short conversation.

I never do this, even with professors I've gotten LORs from or chat with personally all the time. I look at at this way: This is their job. They will do their job with or without you in the class and with or without thank yous at the end. If I have a really good professor that gets to know me well by the end of the year, we have already had enough pleasant conversations to know that I enjoyed their class and learned something. At the end of the semester, I'll say have a great holiday/break, but I never say something equivalent to "Thank you for teaching me."

I've done it once, but it was a class of just 15 people, after I received my final grade. A situation where the prof was a mentor for me
