Hi, I have been trying to get experience in the pharmacy by working as pharmacy tech. I finally got a call from CVS after a 3-4 weeks of waiting and they said I should get a call next week for an interview. The problem is that I will be going away for 10 days in 🙂about 1 month and a week from today. I am not planning on telling CVS that I will be going away because I am afraid they will not hire me because I am going away? I was thinking of telling them that I have to go away for an emergency purpose once I am already hired and started working. Do you think I should tell them once I have started working for a couple of weeks(I should be able to work for a couple of weeks before I am going away, I am also maybe working only on weekends since they only need me during that time) Please consider the fact that I have been trying to get this job for months ( I called like 20 CVS stores around my house, some even located 30 mins away) and I really want to keep this job.

what should i do?

Going away for ten days is no big deal. I wouldn't go out of my way to mention it in an interview, but if asked about needing time off be honest. Needing 10 days off is not gonna affect your chances of getting a job.

I really don't think it's a good idea to start out your working pharmacy career with a lie.

Just explain it to them, if they like you I'm sure they'd be willing to work around it.

I wouldn't tell them, to be honest people are busy and they'd just hire someone else. If you do get hired, then just tell them a little while in, then it would be fine.

Little white lies are alright 🙂

It's not a little white lie. A little white lie is something that doesn't harm anyone. If his manager finds out it wasn't for emergency purposes and you're in your initial training phase, that calls for instant termination.

And you're going to be a professional when you're done with school, it's best to start acting like one now.

👍

At one interview during the spring semester, I explained to the pharmacist about my possible plans during the summer, and she looked at me like it wasn't what she expect to hear, but she said "thanks for the honesty" and we moved on to other things.

It's a lot better to be hired for who you really are, rather than to work having them think you're someone that you are not.

The phrase "little white lie" is relative on how 'little' it is, and while a 'little white lie' might be little to you, it might just be a plain lie to someone else.

It's still a lie, and lying is unprofessional. If the OP lies to the company and the pharmacist, will they ever trust him again? Dunno.

If the OP ever plans to tell them, I think it would be best to tell them before he gets hired or right after he starts, since it is something significant enough to affect the work schedule of others.

Sometimes when you are hired/interviewed, they ask if you already have any plans for time off in the near future. I wouldn't go out of your way to bring it up, but if they do ask you about any summer plans (they probably will), it is best to explain that you already had this planned but that you are really looking forward to working there. The most important thing is to bring it up when you are at the most appropriate part of the interviewing conversation. Essentially, don't be like,"Oh yeah! I'm going out of town!" (What I mean is...don't be awkward). After you talk about it, go on to say something along the lines of that you are a reliable/dependable person and that you wanted to be upfront about this...blahblah interviews are about selling yourself but in a tactful and sincere manner.

Unless you REALLY have to make the trip (wedding, visiting family you haven't seen in ages, etc) then do what you have to do, but tell them the truth at least. However, if your planning to go with family down to Myrtle Beach for the week, well all I can say is your just going to have to make the sacrifice of putting the job before personal enjoyment. Hate to say it, but at this point beggars can't be choosers.

I don't understand why you are taking this so seriously. I am not trying to trick the company or anything. I was just asking how and when I should tell them that I will be going away. I have been trying to get a job as a tech forever and I certainly do not want this opportunity to slip.

I am going away to Europe (Germany, France, and Italy) will visit relative in france

Your just going to have to prioritize here, getting a job vs. visiting relatives outside the country...

My personal choice would be sticking to the job, the relatives aren't going to disappear anytime soon (right?)

Actually, you haven't even gotten the job yet, so no point worrying about it now, get the job first then worry about it. Thus, if you don't get the job, then you can go to Europe and in which case you can buy me something cool...get me a German Beer Stein

I live in NJ, I can drive by to pick it up when you come back.

My mother has bought the plane tickets. I am definitely going away.

Looks like I have to stick to telling them after I have started working.

That's the serious part. It is much better to tell them sooner and have them plan things advance. If you tell them first, they'll be able to plan for everyone else's schedule ahead of time, and if things other than your trip come up, it won't complicate things too much.

You may not think it's a big deal, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

I don't have a problem being honest and tell them that I will be going away. I am just TERRIFIED they will hire someone else instead of me just because I will be out for 10 days ( I am only going to work maybe 2 days a week so maybe i will miss like 2-3 days of work TOP)

Should I tell them my first day of working there? (like when I am already officially hired)

Better to not be hired at all than to get hired and then get fired right away...

If they ask about any summer plans or time off during the summer, then you should tell them, even if they ask before you start working.

You should plan to tell at least someone who works with you, and you can ask them when it would be a good time (as in not too busy) to tell the pharmacist or the manager. If they can take care of that on the first day, then you'll know what to expect after that, rather than staying nervous at work up until the point you tell them.

what if they don't ask me about any plans? Should I keep quiet until i start working? I doubt they will fire me immediately once I am already hired.

Tell them before they hire you. They can work with you to arrange something ahead of time.

what if they are going to say "you either stay and work or we hire someone else" ? This statement is freaking me out.

Again I am only probably going to miss like 2-3 work days so I hope they can arrange something.

First of all, you haven't gotten a interview set up yet, they said they will call you.. so stop stressing ahead of time.

If you knew you will be out for a month why didn't you put on the application your start date 1 month from today, I'm sure there's a place for that on the application.

If you get an interview, then let them know you are leaving for a month, chances are if your a good candidate and do well on the interview they will understand- have some confidence in yourself. I wouldn't wait after I'm hired and tell them "oh, by the way I have to leave for a month" that's just unprofessional.

Depends on the pharmacy manager and lead technician. CVS has a long training program. If they think it's not worth it, chances are, they'll fire you right away. I'd give the heads up during the interview. Say it was planned months ago.

I applied like 2 months ago and COME ON.. if put my available start date one month from today there is no way I would have gotten a call. I am sure they want someone that is available to work right away. They called me and said that they already pulled out my application from the rest and will call me for an interview. I am only leaving for 10 days which will only make me miss 2-3 days of work MAXIMUM.
I think I will tell them during the interview.

If it's 2-3 days of work, then why even risk not telling them the truth. Just be up front about it and explain what's going on. It's not like you're going to visit a town an hour down the road or something.

You're assuming they're going to be very callous when, the majority of the time, those who do the hiring are quite understanding. All you have to do is sell yourself well enough so that they want you. If they're not gonna hire you because you'll be gone for a few days, then they really didn't care for you anyways.

I called up the pharmacy like 3 times prior to getting a call from them. I went there like twice and spoke with the technicians to let them know I REALLY WANT THIS JOB.

Agree with Phathead, if you're leaving only for 2-3 WORK DAYS just let them know, they have other technicians that can fill in those spots during the time your not there.

I don't understand why your freaking out so much, I know you've been looking for a tech job for a while and you finally found a pharmacy that needs help, but just be honest and upfront about your plans. You've been persistent with them which shows your interest but honesty is the best policy, I'm sure they will be understanding.

So you knew you would be unavailable, yet you said you would be available regardless? You made your bed, now you get to sleep in it. The bolded statement is the way to go, springing this on them after you get hired will make some people pretty angry.

So? The technicians have no hiring power. A lot of people might really want this job - lying about your vacation plans isn't the way to get it. Be honest and forthright in your interview and hope for the best. Not getting hired isn't the end of the world, it just means you have to keep trying.

Just be honest during your interview. Most likely they will ask you during your interview of your availability. Then you can mention how you already had this trip planned for months in advance. Also how would miss 3 or 4 days like you mentioned from previous posts if you are going to work weekends. Back it up with what rxlea said about you being dependable/responsible. That way when you are hired everyone knows you will be going away.

However, is there away you can get credit for the trip by not going? I know you mentioned your mother already paid for the trip but can someone else go in place? Some of your co-workers might have negative opinions of you if you go to Europe. They could be complaining about why did we hire and train this person if they are going to be gone for 10 days. We could have hired someone else who will be here for these x amount of days.

LOL of course No one can go besides me. The ticket has my name on it.

the ticket is non refundable $1,230.

I met maybe if you had a brother or a sister that could go instead. That way you can pay a small fee to have their name changed on the ticket.

No one but me can go. I paid $100 for the visa also.

I am just going to tell them during the interview that I will be going away for 10 days. I don't want to be unprofessional. I am sure they will still hire me because I can still work for a few weeks before I leave.

You would pass on going to Europe with your family on the off chance that it might interfere with your chance of getting a tech job?! Now that's dedication! Of course the OP can take a few days off weeks after being hired, if they won't let you miss a few days of work to see family in another country then they are not worth working for. Just give plenty of notice/be honest.

honestly bud, it took ya 30+ posts to come to the same answer I gave you originally.

Just take a deep breath and be honest during your interview, everything will work out just fine.

You're gonna regret working for CVS.

That being said, you're gonna regret working in retail at all.

Best bet is to just try to work at Walgreens, or even Rite Aid (if they have 'em in NJ; I know NY has them...)

why?

Endless phone calls, scripts coming in constantly, people wanting their controls filled early, impatient customers on the phone yelling (mostly at you), customers freaking out when their insurance won't cover something (which means they're gonna be loud), etc.

Bob, that's EVERY pharmacy

Just wait until you get robbed, that's fun

Don't risk the job. There is an oversupply of pre-pharm students which means pharm tech jobs will be hard to come by, wages are going to decrease, and you will have a hard time paying back the credit card debt for your PTCB exam and study materials.

Hey, psych-boy... calm it down... ain't that serious.

But as to the OP asking why... CVS, from what I heard, and I do not know if things have changed, but their computer system interface is still in MS-DOS (?). If you've dealt with DOS (or to those who have dealt with CVS' system), you'll know what I'm talking about.

Walgreens has a much more professional, updated system, not in DOS. It's not Win7, nor Vista... hell, nor XP. It's like using a cross between Win95 and XP, or Win2000. Hell of a lot better than CVS' system. Again, don't know if they still use that DOS-like system.

Also, the Prescription Savings Club that Walgreens offers is the only drug-store discount system that covers brand name drugs, currently (unless I'm wrong, correct me on this by all means.) CVS might have a $4 generic program, but their plan doesn't cover brands (duh, generic program, not brand program.) Trust me, a lot of people still get brand name drugs, even though they don't have (enough) insurance. And the PSC usually covers decently.

GUYS, pharmacy that I will be working for isn't very big. It doesn't seem very busy either. Please don't scare me LOL. I used to work where customers complain at me a lot. All I do is think of him or her as if they are aliens and just pretend to be nice in front of them. What should I expect the first few days of training? They told me they would put me at the register first.

I would recommend asking questions and trying to see what you can do to help out. Until you know how they do things at that specific store, I'd stick to what they teach you first.

OK. I actually have a friend who used to work at CVS as a tech and after a few months, she quit. She said she couldn't stand it. She told me customers are freakin *******s and they complain every single time. She was also required to take classes to be certified.

There are always going to be people like that at any job. If you work in any pharmacy, you're always going to see people you may not like at least once a day. You just have to find a way to deal with it.

Some people are just going to complain about every single detail if something isn't perfect. I know classmates who have done that. You just have to ignore the complaints that aren't significant and pay attention to something else.

When I was at Wal-Mart for 5 months, there were days when I just wanted to quit work and come home. But I didn't. I just talked to my coworkers about it, and they said that some people are going to be that way all the time. So on the next time I had to deal with someone like that, I just let it go.
