Hey folks, OMS3 here.
Here is my plan for SubI and residency. Any input is appreciated.

Step 1: 236
Level 1: 594
Class rank from oms1&2: 59%
(I'm one of those students that went all in for step 1, and ignored Level1/ class rank. I suck at OMM anyways)
I am hoping I can get something in the 240s for step 2. Will take it in June 2018.

Most important thing for me is to be able to live with my wife who works in San Jose, since we are planning to have a family.
There are 3 residencies in the area: KP Santa Clara, SCVMC, and Stanford (I know I definitely won't qualify for Stanford)
I'm looking at their Internal Medicine Program. I'm uncertain about fellowship afterwards, but would like to keep my options open if possible.

I have some undergraduate research activities but no publications associated with it.
I have coauthored a systematic review but it's uncertain if we can get it published on time(if ever).

My main goal for residency is going to be KP Santa Clara, SCVMC (Santa Clara Valley Medical Center)
If not, other community hospitals in the Bay Area(CPMC > KP Oakland, KP SF > St.Mary's in SF, Alameda Health)

Since all my choices are traditionally MD programs, I plan to edge myself in with Sub-internship. (I think I'm generally well liked by my preceptors during rotation, and get good reviews)

In July, I'm going to do Sub-I at Kern as kind of a practice Sub-I. If I don't get Kern, I may submit a SubI UCSF in SF to get the most vigorous training.
August - SubI at CPMC. I already submitted my application for Kern and CPMC.

For September, SubI at SCVMC, but since their subI application has to go through the Stanford visiting student application system, I'm uncertain if I can get in. (Anybody have experience with this?) So as a backup, I plan on applying to UC Davis via VSAS during this time.
For October, I will try SCVMC again with UC Davis or KP Oakland as backup.

For November, I will try SubI KP Santa Clara with KP Oakland or KP SF as backup.

I'm going to try to leave Late November and all of December for a cushy rotation so I can freely go on interviews.

What do you guys think?
Do you think I have a chance at the SubI and/or residency at KP Santa Clara or SCVMC?
Is it a good idea to do so many SubIs?
Do you see any risk or flaws in my plan?

Thank you for reading!!!

The only real risk I see is that they won't like you in subI, but as a DO trying for that area of the country, I think you have to take it. Sounds like a solid plan to me, but I am not familiar with average stats for IM in the area or DO limitations.

Thank you for your input. Yes I am aware of the risk. I’m afraid I defintely wouldn’t get in unless I take that risk.

Any suggestions for a ‘safe’ residency in california I can add to my list just in case I don’t match into any of the above residencies? I am skipping AOA match since all my first choices are the MD-residencies.

I was going to suggest looking at UC Davis, but you already had them in the list. You also already have Kern. I don't think there is really a safe area around the bay. I hear Kaiser is very desired as well around there. Fresno has a UC program but that's beyond communing distance IMO from San Jose. San Joaquin has a IM program with a DO director. Cut off of 220. Probably as "safe" as you can get around mid-north Cal. Both of those are really not that close (3 hours), but when dealing with anything near the bay, ridiculous commutes start to become a thing. Maybe you guys could split in half (i.e. each drive 1.5 hours)? Idk, your in a tough one there. Your wife might just need a new job.

If you add inland empire in you could probably be a bit safer. Lots of stuff near riverside, but Ca is just a tough place for really anything.
