HI! I am new to SDN and am thinking about dentistry. I am going into my 3rd yr of undergradute and am a transfer student. I know this sucks for me now that I think about it🙁. I am getting my A.A. this month and am transferring to St. Johns University( NY). I am only taking biology this Fall besides a couple of other classes this school requires me to take but nothing other than bio. I know I need to take my DATS at the end of my 3rd yr. I know I need to take bio, chem, physics, math.
Do I need to have a required science classes in order to take the DATS?
Do you guys think I can take all the required classes (bio, chem, math, physics) before the end of my 3rd yr?
Do you guys think I can do this? Is this possible? (to take my DATS in my 3rd yr and graduate by the end of my 4th yr? if I also study on my own and educate myself if I cant take some of the classes?)

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!! 🙂

So just to make it clear, you haven't taken any of the science pre-reqs yet necessary for dental school right? If that's the case, it will be a bit more difficult for you to take the DAT by next summer. For the DAT sciences, you will be tested on general biology, general chemistry, and organic chemistry. Physics is not on the DAT (although it is a prereq needed to get into dental school).

In order to take Orgo 1 and Orgo 2, you need to complete Gen Chem 1 and 2. You should take Bio1, and Chem 1 this upcoming fall, and bio 2 and gen chem 2 in spring 2010. You can then take Orgo 1 and 2 during the summer sessions to get ahead. Without having any orgo before the summer, it will be difficult to take the DAT. You can self-study, but orgo is a class many students have trouble with, and I know that I would personally not be able to self-study orgo.

Some dental schools require a couple of upper level sciences such as biochem, histology, cell bio, etc. as well so you need to check each school's website on that. Just about every school recommends you take upper level sciences (but not necessarily before taking the DAT). The DAT tests on general biology, but many upper level bios help you understand concepts of generally biology better. So basically, it's not going to be an easy process, and if you have to take an extra year to apply, then so be it.

Thanks. I will see if I can take chem this fall but my schedule is messed up already. I'll think about the extra yr even though I know I dont want it but it will help. Thanks.

I am a Post-bac student and I took all of the prereqs in one year. Let me just warn you that it is NO fun. I would strongly rec. taking up through organic 2 before taking the DAT.
