Do you think I'll do better in O-Chem II?

Haven't done well in O-Chem I unfortunately. I'm praying for a B this semester and will have to get around an 83% on the final to get it.

For starters I bombed the 1st test, I hated all that orbital stuff. I actually didn't find the mechanism problems very difficult, I understood what to do for them. But the exams only had a few of them so didn't really help me that much.

I heard O-Chem II is mostly mechanisms but is that all?

Spectroscopy, Mass Spectrometry, Mechanisms, chemical structures (sinistral, dextral, racemic, etc....). No way to predict if you'll do better.

i started off with an F, pulled it up to a B for Orgo 1.

finally got into a groove and got an A in Orgo 2. i felt like Orgo 2 was just more reactions -- nothing was fundamentally different.

if you're on an upward trend throughout and you feel like you really are starting to understand, i don't see why you can't do better.

"Orbital stuff" is pretty important stuff to know.

OChem II is harder, but you can do better on it than the first semester due to the experience factor.

Same here. I just dropped to an B last week. Which means between the final, and only, lab exam that I have in about 5 hours that is worth 100 points and the final exam that is worth 200 points, I can only give up 100 more points before I drop to a C. The last few chapters really screwed me up. I should be able to pull it off though. Back to studying. :xf:

For me it is all about the teacher and putting the time into the class. Make sure you get the best teacher you can. Maybe get a few other Orgo prep books to supplement your textbook and notes. That helped me. Also do all the usual study techniques: reading ahead, reading notes after class, doing hw right away, etc..

Good luck!

ps. I thought orgo 2 was easier than orgo 1.

Got a B+ orgo I and an A orgo II.
I think you may pull off a higher grade in orgo II mainly because orgo is a new subject on its own. Its almost completely new to everyone in terms of content and the kind of subject. What this means is that for orgo I, you probably did bad because you didn't know how to study for it, since you may find it a new kind of thing to tackle. Orgo II may be easier in that you will have a better idea on how to study for it.
This was the case for me; I struggled Orgo I, but Orgo II, which I thought was a bit harder, I was able to tackle it with a good study plan.

Totally agreed. Orgo I requires some rewiring of your brain, and it was harder for me to pull off an A than it was in PChem I & Biochem I combined. Orgo II was kind of fun. It builds on what you learned, and makes more sense of the purpose of it...at least it did for me. Orgo II became insanely dry by mid-semester, but I had the hang of it by then.

God is that the understatement of the year. I don't know if it was because I took it over summer with OChem lab as well, but half way through the semester I just wanted to be done. It wasn't because it was hard, it just got so. damn. boring.
