In Sophomore year, I plan to take General Biology 1 and 2, Organic Chemistry 1 and 2, Inorganic Chemistry 1 and 2, and General Physics 1 and 2, which are 32 credits in two semester. So what do you think about it? Do you think it would look ugly? Would taking only science classes in one year cause any problem? Because I want to take DAT after sophomore year. 😎

Most schools require inorgainc 1 and 2 as prereqs for organic 1 and 2.

You're better off taking gen chem over the summer and then doing bio/ochem/physics for two semesters starting in the fall. I know alot of people who did it this way. I would be suprised if your school even offered enough courses to make your plan physically possible once labs are included.

I know but what I'm saying is that is it awkward to take only science classes in Sophomore year?

Biology might be a burden but other courses like chemistry and physics, to me, it is something that I can handle easily. Math too.

Usually, dental schools like to see challenging, science-heavy coursework. However, I also recommend against taking Gen Chem and O-chem at the same time. The other thing to think about is that schools like to see high GPAs. Taking a large portion of your dental school pre-reqs at the same time will put you under a lot of pressure to do well in every class and these classes are not necessarily easy. On top of this, you have the gen and o-chem issues where you really should go into o-chem with a gen chem background in order to get a strong grade. You could do this courseload but I suspect your GPA will suffer and your subsequent dental application will suffer.

I suggest you bulk up on the upper division science classes after you've finished the weed out classes (gen bio and o-chem at most schools).

I second reapply2007's advice. Gen Chem should not be taken concurently with O-chem. You must be a masochist if you want to take physics, bio, and orgo at the same time. Just think about how many hours per week you will spend in lab.

My spring quarter of my sophmore year I was enrolled in physics, bio, and advanced organic synthesis lab (i did orgo the year before) and i didn't light of day until the term was over. I think I spent 15 hour each week in lab, and another 10 doing out of class lab write ups/data analysis.

One more thing to consider: The test is only good for three years after you take it. So if for some reason you decide to take a year off between college and professional school, you will only be able to use the score for one application cycle. So if for some unfortunate reason you don't get in, you'll have to take the test again. I guess this isn't a problem if you intend to go straight into dental school from your sr. year of college.

you dont need physics for DAT so you could always take that after sophomore year and take something else (a nonscience) in place of it...taking all science wouldn't look bad, but then having some semesters without any sciences might not look good...GL😀

Yeah this looks like a pretty light load, you should beef it up a little bit with a side dish of differential equations. My school offers a great course, maybe yours does too...it's called Macromolecular Biophysics, you should take this along with diff EQ. When you have some free time during these classes, you should study for your DAT, ya know...to keep you busy.😉

Don't be sarcastic dude, I am just asking if it's a good plan or not.

Is there any Korean predent here? Cuz I wanna know the difficulty of taking all science classes comparing to High School senior year in Korea.

why do you feel the need to take the DAT after your sophomore year? If you take it early enough toward the end of your junior year, you'll still have time to take it again (90 days between) before it is too late. Dental school is going to be hard enough as it is. Challenge yourself, but don't torture yourself. There's really no need for it. Now, if you're a friggin genius and has an easy time digesting science courses, then go ahead. But, first, physics isn't needed for the DAT, so put that off if you can, and second, if you're trying to show off for the adcoms by doing this, I doubt it will work.

That's just my opinion. I think you should take it easier. Take bio and gchem this year, then take ochem and physics next year, or even physics the year after if it fits your schedule. Temper the science courses with some of those BS gen-ed requirements. Unless you have a really solid background in chemistry from high school, i wouldn't recommend taking gchem and ochem concurrently.

Guys, please don't give me hard time to look at the ridiculous pictures. I didn't know how hard the science lab is. That's why I'm asking you if it's a good plan or not. I'm not showing myself off, I didn't say I am a genius, and I didn't mean to fool anybody else. I WAS JUST ASKING.

And thanks to those of you who gave me good advices. I'd appreciate it.

I think you should do what you know you can handle.
I had genetics, biochem, human anatomy, immunology, all in one semester along with 2 upper level non-science courses (history, and Painting). The four sciences were all upper courses meaning they were classes that grad students takes ( the only difference is that grad students have to write papers.). I ended up spending more time on my two non-science than any of my science courses and ended up with A's and B's? My point is that science comes easy to me so a heavy load in science is no biggie.a lso, only 2 out of my four science classes had labs so I had it kinda easy.

You should take into consideration that chem, o chem, physics, and usually bio all have labs. Labs, which takes up killer time. Personally I don't think the work involved is hard, but it's time-consuming. I don't think it's worth it to spend hours in one lab after another and then go home and write up one lab report after another. That's no way to spend your college years!

Unless there's a dire reason for you to get it all done, take your time. Enjoy your youth because you can always make money but you can't make more time. Remember, don't enter battle unless you're certain you will win the war. Otherwise, go and ask America to fight it for you! 😀
I kid! I kid!

Okay, I finished first year in high school in Korea. I didn't go through "go 3" thing, so I can be wrong. But since you want to know what other Korean pre-dent who went to high school in Korea, here I am.

I, too, thought you were joking when I first read your post. Obviously I'm wrong. anyway, I agree with other posters here. I don't know how hard the gen chem classes are at your school, but I would say these classes are demanding, timewise. I mean, I spent 2-3 hours a day just to study orgo almost everyday and was able to get A. (I don't even know how I did it but I just wanted to prove myself that I could do it.) That was just for orgo. Think about homework for other classes. It will be disaster to keep up with other classes.

Why don't you talk to other people in your school who have taken those classes and ask them what they think about your schedule?

Take it easy and enjoy your life!!😍

I don't even know how hard "go3" is dude. What I know is what I heard. And what I heard is "go3" is a bloody diaster. So I don't even want that thing happen to me either 😉 Seems like everyone got me wrong. So I'll say it again. I WAS JUST ASKING.

im planning on taking the DATS towards the end of my sophomore year too, which would be this may. but thats only cuz i wanna get into dental school a year early. im taking physics, microbio, orgo, and calcII. and i do research on the side too. ive lost count of the number of hours i spend at the lab per week. its crazy, but if it means getting in a year early and saving all that money. go for it. just to warn u. you'll get like 2-4 hrs of sleep every night. 5 if you're lucky.
current gpa-3.7
if i can do it. lol ANYONE CAN.
