Is there no room for professionalism in medicine anymore? I know a doc who was asked to leave her job due to less unsavory pics than the one this doc420 is putting out there.

The content is also ridiculous. This 'doc' states she won't charge a patient if they don't qualify for mj and she will match anyone's price - like a grocery coupon.

She has finished one year of residency but states she has completed 3 years of family med residency.

Is there no accountability for anything? Or is Cali just a different beast altogether?

perhaps, but they have a disproportionate impact and impact is all that matters....

for example, 1 pill mill doc in florida can provide enough opiates for over 2000 addicts in any given month......

not comparing pill mill docs(ie out in the open felons) to the med marijuana clinics because the seriousness of it is on a different scale and well as the legal status, but it's a similar principle in some ways

i guess the question is taking the emotion out of it for a treatment that is legal (in the state of CA when deemed medically necessary/beneficial/therapeutic/etc...) what do the statues and the Boards allow one to do. what are ALL the ways that are legal to find folks that can benefit from a treatment.

akin to agressive PSA screening by urology groups or agressive screening for depression or aggressive screening for ADHD or sleep apnea or spine surgery. the flip side as well for treatments that don t get to patient's enough this is an important question.

well state boards reall only go after the most egregious of cases....

also, and a point nobody has brought up, what exactly is she doing that the state board could go after?

1) She has a valid medical license. She certainly doesnt have a high level of training, having only completed one or two years of residency in family medicine. But hey, that's not the rule in california to get a medical license. And given that she has a medical license, it doesn't appear that she is doing anything really outside the scope of her very limited training level(iow she doesnt appear to be doing much but screening for med marijuana)

2) As for the med marijuana, regardless of how one feels about it....it is legal in california and these clinics are everywhere. Additionally, the law is written(and the standard of care has been defined as such) that the dx that qualify for a med mj card can be very vague. If the state board were to go after her for her liberal use of mj cards, they would have to both go after hundreds of docs there as well as maybe amend the law/standard of care

3) As for the other stuff- revealing photos, a tacky website, etc....the state board has no grounds to go after someone based on those things(at least in the way she is doing them)

So the more I think about it, the clearer it is that the state board would have no standing here. And you can't say she is doing anything not out in the open. She's very famous and has given tons of interviews.

I tend to look at it like this: Here is someone who has a number of positive attributes(great looking, very outgoing likely, saavy business lady) who probably also truly believes that marijuana has a role in helping people physically. Whether we agree with that or not, the state of california has spoken and that's the way it is. So she's doing what she believes and using her skills(photogenic, outgoing, business sense) to be fabulously successful at it.......

if she were promoting herself as an expert in medicine or whatever, I may feel differently about her. But from her website it is clear pretty much all she does is screen patients for medical mariuana cards(and Im sure pretty much everyone gets one). It doesnt appear she is writing for controlled substances for example, or functioning as a pill mill. She plays by the rules and is incredibly successful at it.....

While these are good points, I am unsure Doc420's approach is the correct one. I know lots of attractive and successful docs that don't behave this way to get patients and attention.

she has a medical license yes and that allows her to do what she does, but she isn't practicing 'medicine' in any real sense, and I suspect she would agree with that. She's a businesslady who has completed the minimum training to get a med license in cali, and in cali a medical license is all that is required to function as a med mj card provider.....

I wouldnt neccessarily compare her to most other physicians, and I suspect she wouldnt either.

i doubt it. she has been doing this for a long time and has become very successful at it. She hasn't had the slightest sniff of a boundary violation, and I suspect she knows(considering her lack of training and high profile) to make sure to stay extra clean. As for opoid meds, I doubt she ever writes them.....looking at her website it is pretty clear *all* she does is screen people for med mj cards.

Again, a lot of this is going to depend on how you feel about the 'marijuana issue' in general.

Medical evaluation includes a good faith physical prior to prescribing any medication. Her case is one to be example of by cracking down, just as they are on marijuana "dispensaries" all throughout the state. Just a matter of time, and enough complaints.

depending on the nature of the presentation, a non-trivial % of physicians across several different areas of medicine don't do a "physical" prior to prescribing medication. Note that it's also a gray area as to whether or not a mj letter falls in the same class as a rx......

state medical boards simply can't and don't investigate every physician who isn't running around performing physicals and practicing optimal medicine. hell they can't even manage to investigate all but the most egregious examples of pill mills where multiple people die with ridiculous amounts of opiate rx being filled. Given that, there chances of investigating a physician who gives mm letters for 40 bucks, doesnt appear to be writing for controlled substances, and does a careful job of documenting residency status is practically zero. This women has been successfully doing this for a long time, and the cali medical board would want nothing to do with investigating her because it would open up a can of worms they dont want opened.

A more realistic future problem for this physician is if support for true legalization ever could get stronger...2 years ago it failed in cali with 56 percent against for now, so it looks like she might be safe for awhile

As to judging her to be hugely successful based on her website? My take is that it's an ego thing (look at the ostentatious nouveau-riche real estate porn shots for crissake). There's no shortage of docs like her. take BART and you see lots of advertisements much more geared towards the MJ crowd. She's one of many....

I have some problems with your analogy, except for perhaps aggressive screening for ADHD (and prescription of stimulants). A better analogy would include aggressive screening for "pain" and overuse of opioids.

This person is a drug dealer, plain and simple. If you had bothered to watch this cringe inducing video ( I suggest you do so) , it's blatantly obvious she uses leading questions in order for her "patients" to qualify for "medical marijuana".

Her lack of physical exam and informed consent are hardly surpising considering her stunning lack of professionalism.
