Doctor from Iran

Hi,

One of my friends recently moved here from Iran. She has practiced medicine for around 4-5 years there, but as you guys know, she needs to take her Step 1, 2, and 3 before she can officially call herself a doctor here. She feels moderately comfortable with 2 and 3, but is having trouble with Step 1 because its been a while since shes studied the basic sciences, and because they are not emphasized as much in Iran.

She wants to take the exam in May/June, and this goes without saying but she wants to do as well as possible. How should she prepare? What other tips/advice would you guys give her?

Currently she has invested in the UWBank questions (I think thats what its called-- its the online database of around 2000 questions), and she is also taking a 8 week Kaplan review course starting in January.

That sounds like a good start, but she should definitely invest in First Aid. It is the best way to prioritize study topics, especially for the "general" things like biochemistry. Most people find that Goljan is an invaluable resource as well. I wish her all the best of luck 🙂

So she should get all the goljan books? How are they compared to BRS? Likewise, is there a good combination to get from each? How do you guys feel about the Kaplan course? are their dvd's worth the money?

in her case they are, they go into quite a lot of detail which is good for someone out of medschool for a while.
and if she does the 8 wk course I would suggest her to replace their pathology book with goljan, thats all.
