Hi, I am currently a high schooler and I want to be a doctor after college. I am currently looking for options and want to know about being a trauma surgeon in the army. How can the army help me with college? After college, how long am I required to serve? I am pretty clueless about this and I want to know what it's all about. If anyone knows about this option it would be great if you helped me. Thank you!

i saw that you posted this also in sdn/military medicine... what are your motivations for becoming a trauma surgeon? for being in the Army?

if you want to be an army trauma surgeon you will have to complete 4 years of college, get accepted to medical school, complete 4 years of medical school, complete 6 years of general surgery residency, and then 2 years of trauma/critical care fellowship. your payback will likely be 6-12 years, depending on how much financial assistance you receive from the military. if your concept of being a trauma surgeon in the army is based on "grey's anatomy" or similar shows, you will likely be sorely disappointed. unless you are on deployment, you will likely spend your time stateside doing a lot of "bread and butter" general surgery procedures and pulling some shifts in the surgical ICU. experiences on deployments can range from a constant stream of blood-and-guts, to complete boredom everyday for 9 months.
