Doctor worth it?

Is it worth it to become a doctor (MD) anymore? With all these political and health insurance uprises, I feel salaries of MDs will be hit hard. Working 10 years to pay off med school loans after putting in all the efforts in undergrad and medical school doesn't seem that nice.

Not about the money my man/woman. Yeah, the salaries are taking a hit, but it's not about the money and it should never be. It's a nice BENEFIT, nobody can doubt that and it adds financial security and to your family, but you should want to go into medicine for other reasons.

If you want to find another profession that can get more money and hopefully FIX the economic problem so doctors can earn more money than football players, then that would be great.

Honestly, I think you need a better personality if you only are in it for the money.

Amount of money is all relative. Look at it this way: yes physician reimbursement is going to drop more more in the future but at the end of the day it's a job that's going to leave you >95th percentile in America for earnings and let you work almost anywhere you want in the country. What other job offers that? And don't say business because there's a small chance that one could make as much money with less work and commitment. Is the investment-payoff worth it? Only you can decide that, but it is if you like medicine IMO.

If you become a physician, you will always be around the top 1% of income in the US. It doesn't matter where you practice or what specialty you choose.

This is a fact and it will never change.

I believe you have to make about $325K to be considered part of the 1%, but yes, you should be able to live comfortably as a physician as long as your last name isn't Kardashian.

They make the same in each specialty, on average. A cardiologist is a cardiologist, an anesthesiologist is an anesthesiologist, etc., and they are paid as such regardless of the two letters that follow their name.

Do they do the same things? If so, why differentiate against the two. Why can't all DO schools just make themselves into MD schools, making life easier for all.

Just restarted this morning, after one of my readers told me share it on SDN.

I am trying to reach out to as many people as possible because lessons I learned apply to a
wide spectrum of people at all phases of their medical/health professional training.

Seems like you are a seasoned SDN member, if you have any advice on how to reach the most people on SDN without duplicating messages, please let me know.

Um I think his point is SDN isn't a site for you to spread a message to the widest number of people, it's a site where people solicit and receive advice. If it's a good thread people will come. If you have to resort to reposting all over the site, and bumping up several year old threads, it wasn't a good thread to begin with and shouldn't take up more space.

The answer to this question is extremely simple: it's relative to the person. There is no point even bringing up salary when considering becoming a doc. For me, the money is besides the point. Yes, it is a nice added bonus, but its so far from the determining factor. Even though I wont be applying to med school until next year, I've known for quite some time this was the career for me. The only career that could satisfy my intellect and personality. If I was on the edge or worried about things like money, I'd quit now.
