anyone else notice that doctors act like they always have the answer? that they'll rarely say "i don't know". and that this can carry on into their personal lives, rather than just their professional lives. ever run across docs that think they know what's best for you and don't hesitate to tell you what it is. don't be like this. just cuz you have a lot of answers for sick people does not make you god. it can make it unbearable to be around you and make you look pompous without even knowing it. beware.

Firstly, you need to settle down.

huh? i'm settled down. just sparking conversation.

haha come on man. every doctor has to have a certain sense of arrogance. i mean, getting to the point where you're telling people what to do is a little too much. i know that i'm going to give my patients the facts and give them a recommendation but ultimately, let them make the decisions.

I think I'll be okay because I'm already like this.

Dude, I know exactly what you're talking about. My doctor that I used to shadow for tells me how to live my life and criticizes me for making certain decisions. Although this physician is pretty knowledgable, I felt that she crossed the line on several occasions. Power affects the best of them I guess.

My other post was a joke, for those not in-tuned with my sense of humor, which is to say everyone...

But in all seriousness, there will always be bad physicians. There will always be bad people. You can't avoid this. The best you can do is to avoid becoming the same thing.

I'm already seeing that attitude in some medschool classmates. A great start 👎

that's why we need to coalesce and become the first generation of humble doctors. that cockiness is only sexy in sports. 😎

I think everyday at work people ask you these extremely important possibly life altering questions and you know all the answers. Then you go home and your wife or one of your friends asks, "you know what the F in JFK stands for?" and you reply, " Oh yeah sure it stands for Franklin, you know after Franklin Derek Roosevelt."

what's with the attitude? did i say something to bother you?

She's joking since you started a thread about arrogant doctor telling people what to do... so she's telling you what to do, jokingly.

Now thirdly, you need to get a sense of humor... 😀

Okay, Mota, I'm with you on this one. I didn't get it, and that's considering I have pretty twisted sense of humor myself.

Did you just get out from a bad doctor's appointment? I once went to a dermatologist who treated me like I was insignificant and was wasting his time. When I told him that I didn't like certain acne products he goes into this tirade of assumptions about me; I didn't like that it was drying, I didn't care enough about my face, I was not using the medication correctly etc. He was full blown jerk. I sat there and took it because he was one of the few dermatologists that accepted my insurance. If the appointment lasted any longer, he probably would have told me that I didn't wipe myself correctly neither. 😡

Totally agree...it is the most annoying trait that so many docs have. Both my sister and my father have it...more so my father than sister...my pops does not apologize for anything even if he is blatantly wrong b/c in his mind he is right.

Yeah, my mom's nurses have asked me how I live with her, and I said something like "I did go to high school at a boarding school and college out of state. There might have been a reason for that." But to her credit, she never tried to push me into medicine. If she did, I would probably have avoided the entire field out of sheer contrariness 🙄

Basically, it seems like you are giving the description of an engineer. I only know a few, but I've heard from others that they have a nact for never being wrong and always having an opinion (correct of course).

I've met a lot of doctors who have taught me that the 3 most important words in medicine are "I don't know." Plenty of doctors say it, and I admire those ones more than the others. In fact, I've learned the most from them. If you don't know an answer, don't try to bullsh** one. It'll easily show through. Simply admit, "I don't know," but follow it up with, "...but I'll find out the answer and let you know." Then, start your homework!!!

They breed the "I don't know" out of you when they pimp you. "Is it the stomach? Do you think or do you know?"

It's just like the army, isn't it? They mold you in a certain respect.

don't know what it is like to not know it all!

Fun question, Mota. Actually, in twenty years working in healthcare, I more often than not encounter physicians who think they know more about accounting than I do, and I'm a CPA. Physicians sometimes seem to forget that there are other professions that are licensed - for a reason.

Coming to medicine as late in life as I am, I hope I won't do that... 😳
