doctor's salary

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If this is going to be a conversation about 1) whether or not douchebaggery is warranted, or 2) guestimating the percentage of SDN users that are d-bags, then this should be a short thread. Answers:

1)No

2) The vast majority of you. Perhaps 80% or so. If you're offended by him not searching before asking then you are too easily offended and a bit selfish really. If you can help someone, especially when it's quite simple, you should.

OP: Any doc will make enough to live comfortably as long as a GP isn't going out and buying a Ferrari (even wealthy people can live outside their means). Internists make 120-200K a year on average, and a gen surgeon might make 200-350K a year on average. You should take into account varying hours, sub-specialties, and varying costs such as liability insurance when comparing. An interventional radiologist I shadowed said his friend, a CT surgeon, has almost 100k a year in insurance. Location is obviously important as well since 200k in Manhattan is not 200k in Des Moines, Iowa.

Perhaps you are a "d-bag" for insinuating that others can be correctly characterized as "d-bags" under such petty circumstances as replying negatively in an overly-simplistic thread?

Food for thought. 🙂

+1 Never seen that one haha

Wow, so 4 out of 5 SDN users are jerks? Think you might be overestimating a bit there buddy.

You do realize that peoples on line personals are often extremely different than how we are in real life? Judging if people will make a good doctor, or even if they are D-bags based on their behavior online is pretty pointless IMHO. A more interesting point to ponder, is what does it say about human nature if giving people anonymity generally brings out meanness in them. In reality, as Hobbes said, is human nature dark, and its only the constraints of society that make most of us be nice?

Anyway, I'll be the bigger bird and apologize. I'm sorry that I came off as being overly harsh toward the OP, I should have been nicer, regardless of whether or not I feel that this thread was warranted.

This thread turned a little serious, lol.

Oh give me a break. First off, doctors aren't the only profession that "helps people". Secondly, it is a stupid question that could be explored in fewer steps on one's own by using any search engine of your choosing. It is just a waste of space to even create a thread like that.

I suppose you give all the money in your wallet to any person that asks. Have homeless people stay in your place on a routine basis to get out of the weather and have sold off all your posessions and donated the money to charity right before you went over to a third world country to save orphans.

Straw man argument...it was never said or implied that doctors are the only professionals that help people. It was said that helping people is a characteristic that is central to being a doctor, or at least a good one.

Your second paragraph is just nonsense. Your hyperbolic depiction of "helping people" is in no way on the same plane as giving someone a straight answer instead of cursing them to leave. Just because the answer is obvious to you or easily looked up doesn't mean it's a stupid question. Maybe the OP was more comfortable using this mode of information-seeking than google or whatever.

It is garbage to vilify people for asking questions. Take that hate to the roid-rage forums, and keep the pre-med/med forums at least respectful.

I have to agree, lately it seems almost every thread is greeted with people calling the OP a troll as of late. I'm sure we've been scaring off lots of perspective members through being so harsh to first time posters. 🙁

Perhaps this is net income?

I doubt ER docs are making 180K average. Even the AAMC website says the range is 239k to 316k. That website had some weird way of collecting/reporting the data.

Haha. Well, I think that you highlighted my point. Is it not douchey to take advantage of such an easy burn on someone apparently unfamiliar with SDN etiquette? I will admit to you that my opinion was reflecting a greater observation of continual negativity on this forum, and not necessarily just this case. On a separate note, I've always wondered whether or not your picture of "The Gipper" is there to be ironic or as an overt show of support. Just curious man.

Duck: I wasn't really trying to insult anyone, and never said anyone will be a bad doc. Just pointing out that we can all be nicer sometimes. No worries.

Gettheleadout: I have found that hyperbole is a great way to call attention to something important. Obviously 4/5 people aren't jerks. I'm sure in real life most of you are charming people.

What do you mean? That is my picture (I'm slightly nontrad).

. Well you should have quite the PS sir. Make sure to mention the rebellion you started in college. Everyone loves a rebel, even ADCOMs.

Nice Patel lol

Welcome to the internet! There are no real girls and everyone's a douche. Enjoy your stay.

:welcome:

After reading many of the posts on this thread, I am conforted by the fact that a large majority of you on it will not matriculate into medical school and poison the atmosphere there with you sh*tty attitudes.

Have a nice life.
thats not very nice 🙁

On the same note, it would seem to me hardly unfeasible that the OP could be interested in the opinions of people specifically on this forum. I don't think OP is helping themselves out by calling everyone else fools, but I agree that it's pretty easy to simply not respond if you feel that a thread is not worth responding too... imagine that

Why? That's damn good money.

I guess it depends on your definition of damn good. When you consider 10 years opportunity costs, 200K loans, less time-value of investments, family obligations, mortgage, cars, college tuitions for kids etc. it's just okay money. Enough that you will be financially comfortable, put your kids through college, pay debts, but certainly not enough to buy all the latest and most expensive toys.

Plus it's human nature to compare salaries relative to others of their social position (i.e. other specialists, who earn substantially more). A PCP or doctor who earns less than 200K probably thinks they are underpaid and undervalued compared to a anesthesiolgist or cardiologist, because they went through the same years (give or take) of training, are just as necessary a component of the healthcare system, and probably made similar sacrifices in the name of medicine.

Yeah, you have a point I guess. My parents are paying out of pocket for college, and if I get into medical school they claim they'll pay for that too (but I don't think they know how much it is tho). And I don't plan on having kids or having a wife. So, 165k is great money for somebody like me. Hell, I don't even think I want a house, just a nice apartment lol. Maybe I'll splurge on a motorcycle or something.

Dr. Gregory House, is that you?

Anyone that doesn't think 165k is a lot should try surviving on 20k with a family of three.

Neurologists should generally make a little more than that though. A bit over 200k on average is what I've noticed from multiple sources. Of course it is the internet so the exact figures are probably not correct (which is why I looked at a few).

For real  Why wouldn't you want to have a wife, iqe?

Yes yes we know it's good money (quite a bit more than my family makes) but the issue is it's a lot less than you could make in other specialties.
