Document with avg hrs per week: good stuff!

Sucks to be those Trauma surgeons working 86 hours/week (NOT INCLUDING CALL).... Suckers!!

I just find it really interesting that many specialties come very close to 40 hrs per week. Pretty much any high-tier profession hits about 50 hrs per week (just ask my dad, the engineer). Just goes to show that you can pretty much work as much or as little as you want in medicine (unless you're a surgeon, in which case you'd rather not be anywhere but the O.R.--not that there's anything wrong with that!).

It's a pretty small sample size - it's good to know that one trauma surgeon works 86 hours/week, but I wouldn't draw any conclusions about the rest of them from that.

Don't forget that NONE of those work hours listed include call...

This doesn't make a difference for specialties like EM (43 hrs/wk = 43 hrs/wk b/c they don't take call), but this makes a huge difference for other specialties like Anesthesia, Medicine, Surgery. Those specialties are already listed at 45-60 hrs/wk and if you add call you're talking about WELL over 50 hrs/wk for all of them.

Depends. My family doc in my hometown works about 40 hrs a week, no call.
