It is not necessary, but highly suggested. Obtaining a letter of recommendation from a DO, on the other hand, is required by some schools and highly recommended by those who don't require it. My advice, shadow a DO so you can see what osteopathic medicine is all about in practice and so you can get a letter of rec from him/her, which you may need depending on the schools to which you're thinking about applying.
