I am just agonizing as many NY schools haven't offered me an interview nor rejected me. I'm also a re-applicant because my brilliant pre-med advisor suggested I go ahead and apply in mid september 👎

Anyways, is a Letter of Interest going to make any difference at this stage? I"ve already sent in one Update Status detailing my new job, sent in 2 LOR's from my Primary Investigator (a DR) and the Research Co-ordinator. I still haven't heard anything.

I'm considering writing a detailed Letter of Interest explaining why I would love to attend this university and also why I want to stay in NYC. I guess my question is, it would take a lot of work and I'm curious if there would be any potential benefit or is it just kind of very minor.

Thanks!

I think you should go for it, because the hour or two it would take to write such a letter is such a small cost when you consider it could be what pushes them to interview/maybe eventually accept you. definitely do it.

👍

It may or may not work, but it can only help you out.

You should know by now that you should take the words of a pre-med advisor with a bucket of salt.

is applying mid september really that bad? that's what i did...

Yes. But does it guarantee you failure? Of course not.

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any published data that fully breaks down how many applicants are accepted (on avg) that apply in each month or any way to accurately derive this data.

My philosophy is if you don't write one, then you'll never know if it will help or not. But if you do, at least you can say to yourself "I've gave it my best shot." 🙂

I'd like to throw in another question here... In one of these letters of intent, is it too desperate to make the type of statement along the lines of "If you accept me, I will 100% go here"?

And obviously, this is assuming you will follow through...

I believe some people say something along the lines of "If I am accepted to your school, I plan on withdrawing all other applications and matriculate at your school in the fall."

And you have to follow through, cuz saying you'll 100% go there and then not makes you look like a doodoohead.

Why in the world did your advisor tell you this ? Thats nonsense. I would of been very pissed at him/her.

I am very pissed! But you know med schools - they don't like excuses, or whiners - so I have to just suck it up and PRESS ON! Which is easier said than done frankly but I'm praying for an accept - I got 5 interviews, I'm on a wait list - Still waiting to hear from two schools I interviewed at ... so I'm just praying and hoping

As far as the letter of interest, I will write on, I'll also include new volunteer work I've been doing - couldn't hurt...

You don't need to bump this thread no more. Ultimately, the decision to send an interest letter in or not is yours. Just ask yourself how bad you want to get the interview invite, and you'll know what to do 🙂

You had five people give you virtually the same advice: there is no reason to bump this further.

May or may not be obvious, but I wanted to add that you should call schools and confirm that they accept LOI's before you spend the time to write them because I know that not all schools welcome them.
