I couldn't find anything on this in the pre-dental forum, but my question is this. I'm 19 right now and will be applying in June. I'll be 20 when I (hopefully) go to dental school next year (2010). Does anyone know if this will negatively impact me? Thanks 😀

I don't think age really matters. What really matters is whether or not you'll have your Bachelors by that time

Yes, I'll have my bachelor's by the time I enter dental school.

In a word, no.

As NY said, have your degree in hand. If you've got the DAT scores, GPA, extra curriculars, and dental experience, you should be fine.

i'm sure schools will love to have a doogie howser 😀

We had one guy that was 19 when he started in our dental school class. He graduated high school at age 16. He did great in school. He is now on the faculty of a well know dental school in one of our biggest states. He was one of my best friends in dental school.

Don't give your age one bit of worry!

It is less a question of age and more a question of level of maturity.

I agree. I've heard of some dental students getting their bachelor's and starting dent school by the time they're 18 - so as long as you're comfortable with the idea yourself, then you should be fine.

Im with you Kahr ... ill be 28 in May

Thanks for the encouraging words all 🙂 I know it's not something I can change, but it's good to know what dental schools might consider a weakness!

Like Doc said, it's a maturity thing. Not sure how how much they can gauge that in a interview but with your age, they will be looking at that.

We had a 19 year old in the class behind mine. Not a big deal so don't sweat it.

19? damn, i am jealous.

Wow, you are 19. God, I am getting old man 😀. Keep your composure. I totally agree with other SDNers ( maturity is much more important than age).

I was 20 when I started. Didn't matter one bit. Looking back, I've spent most of my 20s getting my dental education - 4 years of dental school, 4 years of residency.

Yes, I'm going to give you a wedgey if I find you at my school.
