I'm really really excited about a particular residency program and will be going there for an away rotation. I was wondering if doing an away rotation at a given program in September (i.e. before interview invites go out) is an automatic in for an interview (assuming of course that my clinical performance isn't lackluster). This seems to depend on specialty and I'm not sure where EM falls. Thanks in advance!

It varies based on program. A lot of places will guarantee you an interview, but if you are an underqualified applicant, it may still be a lot for you to match there. Some places don't guarantee an interview, but as long as you don't royally screw something up, it would likely be bad form for them not to talk to you. Some places won't accept you for a rotation if they don't think you have a chance to match. I did two rotations. One guaranteed interviews, and the other didn't (but everyone there the month I was was offered one.) As has been said a bunch of times before, if you're a borderline applicant, and you rock your rotation, it can help you.

I did 4 aways. 3 gave courtesy interviews. One did not.

No guarantees although many places tend to give courtesy interviews as long as your application isn't terrible below the program's requirements. I matched where I rotated and I think I got an interview because they liked how I performed in their ER.

It depends on the program. I matched at a place that gave me a courtesy interview. 🙂

What about doing a late rotation? Say November, too late for a meaningful SLOR, but should one go just for the opportunity for an interview. Assuming that the application is up to par wrt grades, scores, letters, but with possibly only 1 SLOR in ERAS as of Nov 1 [another later in the month].

I matched at the place I rotated in November. The SLOR I got out of it probably did not have as much of an impact as it probably would have earlier in the season though.

If it's a place you might want to go to, go for it. If nothing else, it will help you make up your mind come ROL submission deadline. Also, if it's a place different from what you've experienced so far (say, county while you've only rotated at academic or community hospitals) also go for it, for the same reason.

So, should I try to get another rotation just to have another SLOR? BTW the SLOR I will get from July will be an away since my home school doesn't have an EM residency.

Do I need two SLORs for interviews?

Programs have different requirements. All ask for at least one SLOR, some ask for 2. I am an FMG and had to apply widely, so I needed more than one SLOR to be considered at as many places as possible. Check the requirements of the programs you are thinking of applying to. If you will be applying to a lot fewer places than me (most certainly, if you are an AMG) you might find that a lot of them may only require 1 SLOR. If the majority of the programs you are interested in ask for 2, then either try to schedule another away relatively early on (before October) or see if it's possible to get more than one letter from your July rotation. At some places that's totally doable (got 3 letters from my first away) at others not so much.

Most have a requirement of 1, but some 2. Does anyone know if they require the letters in by the time the MSPE comes out, or is that to interview/rank?

I am hoping to be real aggressive with my October rotation site wrt getting out the 2nd SLOR.

Hey I though I'd tack on a student question in here. Ive just begun 3rd year. I'm doing a rads rotation at an institution that I think I would like to end up at for residency some day. I'm very interested in EM as well. My question is, is there any good way for me to introduce myself to any of the EM physicians and maybe do a shift with them? My schedule is very lax right now sO I have lots of free time. The problem is that I'm at the beginning of third year and know absolutely nothing, but I won't be able to come back to this place for a while. Will I just be a nusence?

Thanks.

Hmm. In DO school you are allowed to do away rotations? Next, I think that if you introduced yourself to an attending in the ED that they would allow you to at least shadow.

Also, don't worry about not knowing anything. This would be more to see if your interests lie in the ED, so nobody would expect you to "know anything". Plus you would be just starting the M3 year. I remember that feeling last year, very very green.

You'll be fine.

yeah, I am a DO and my entire MS 3-4 yrs were "go find it on your own" away rotations. we're a new school and still establishing affiliates. definitely go visit the ER and get the word out that you're there because you're interested despite being on another rotation. start hinting you'd like a rotation there as an MS4 and show up for the lectures if you can. meet the residents, that's going to be key if it's a place you want to attend.
as for the interview, most places will give you a courtesy interview just for rotating there but definitely not all, although it will help if they see you work vs just seeing you on paper.
