I decided to check out our new "pre-med" club last night. I had gotten an email from one of my professors that the pre-med club president wanted me to come in and talk about prepping for medical school. I can't believe people actually put this crap down on applications as it's apparent anyone can be anything in these clubs.

The club president wanted to talk to me about the MCAT, schools I'm applying to, etc etc since I'm just about the only one there who has taken the MCAT with any sort of success.

First, a student asks me about acceptable GPAs and whatnot, and this girl (the president) has the gall to tell me I overdid it in college because she only has a 3.0x, and you only need a ~3.2 to be competitive. "Why overwork yourself to the point of stress" was her logic. Have fun in med school, kid.

Later on, after answering a question about how to study for the MCAT to another student, she interjects at the end saying that "I'm an exception to the study rule" and that a 28 is what we should all be shooting for to remain competitive. I politely disagreed with her, and then spoke to a few students after the club telling them how wrong that was.

As we're wrapping up the night, I'm casually talking about some schools I'm interested in, and this girl has the audacity to start laughing at me because Mayo is a sub-par school where I'dbe getting a sub-standard education in comparison to other schools. I was floored!

Needless to say, I walked away laughing as she's the one living in fantasy land with a 3.0x gpa and shooting for a <30 MCAT score. All this while hoping to attend Case Western  Sometimes people who have no idea what they're talking about, yet insist on talking, drive me absolutely insane. The saddest part is that she's going to put down "Pre-med Club President" on her app, and some nuts out there will be impressed by it.

I nearly raged. I'd like to talk to this individual.

All that crap about the GPA and MCAT just makes her seem jealous, but the above statement is basically the dumbest thing ever.

All your condescending crap aside, I get your point. In general, no offense here guys, pre-meds tend to be a bit arrogant. They also, in general, are a bit more abrasive personalities. Not everyone, and I'm certainly generalizing.

One of the reasons I initially didn't think I wanted to do medicine was because I really didn't feel like I fit in with all the pre-meds at my college. They were way to revved up. That whole gunner mentality I guess.

I think the important thing to remember is that we also don't know how we come across no matter how right we think we may be. You may have come across as condescending, arrogant, or rude and not have even known it.

Just bring MSAR to the next meeting.

Better than complaining about how stupid people are, you should just show them that they are wrong. Most would appreciate the info. Then, move on.

Great that's fantastic. You seem to be more knowledgeable than group of students. Is that what you wanted to hear? Was this a thread to bash on people who think they know things?

Your tone is ridiculous, humble yourself. To me, you are those group of kids who think they know something.

I also question the validity of your stories, I think your lying.

Not getting into Case with those numbers and definitely not with that attitude.

she must have been in dreamland. I'm sure some have gotten into an MD school w/ those stats, but very difficult nonetheless. Maybe she's thinking about DO schools? But I think you need a better gpa to get into DO schools?

Honestly, you're going to find premeds are like this everywhere. Honestly, I think the title premed may have some social influence upon how we act. I've noticed that amongst highly competitive premed students (i.e., SDN), I tend to be more abrasive than I ordinarily would be. No, she probably won't get in with those stats and that attitude, but it's not really your place to determine that. Neither is it her place to tell you what you should (not) be doing (especially when she clearly has not done the research herself).

Well you should have fun here. Nearly everyone here gets 35+ on the MCAT, has almost a perfect GPA, and owns A MSAR.

Yes, they are very annoying but at the end of the day you're going to be fine and they're going to be living with the consequences of their idiocy. The only thing that you can do is try to educate them and then sit back and watch the train wreck with a bag of popcorn if they still don't listen to you.

It's sad that she is the president of the pre-med club. I know that she wouldn't even be competitive to get into the nursing program at my county's community college with a GPA that low.

I don't think that she sounds jealous. She sounds more like an idiot who hasn't done her homework. Good luck to her.

Been thinking that for awhile, personally.

At first I was like, "Man, OP's tone makes him an annoying SOB."

Then I was like, "Man, these people that the OP is describing are annoying SOB's."

Then I was like, "Man, OP and described people have a lot in common."

Jakes on him, and on you OP for attending such a group. Pre-med clubs are about as worthless as they get.

You should have referred them all to this site. Anyone who spends a couple months following the application cycle on here learns quick what realistic stats (and ECs) are for allopathic acceptance.

And btw, I though this thread was about the stupidity of the general public (most notably their general lack of scientific understanding and objectivity), which actually enrages me much more than naive premeds.

I have to agree with the op that lots of premed clubs are ignorant, but also admonish him that in medical school YOU Are the ignorant twerp.
i would love to be the ignorant twerp at your school. just sayin.

👍 and oh, did anyone else notice how OP's MedApps says 43R for his MCAT score?:laugh::laugh:

I got a 47Z. Just sayin'

OP - You do realize the hilarious...coincidence in you posting this here, right? Your condescension and tone is analogous to the girl in that meeting. 👍

Mayo is subpar? WTF?

Mayo isn't ranked by US News (at least the last time I checked). I can see how somebody might think that equates to sub-par education if they didn't know that those rankings don't mean a lot.

Most premeds aren't premeds.

I laughed out loud sitting at my computer because of how true this is👍

Saying you "just hate uneducated people who..." is pretty harsh.

I actually get along better with uneducated people than I do most educated people...

Obviously the president of said club is just trying to get rid of her competition by trying to convince you to not do your best so she can be the one that shines with the better GPA and MCAT.

Obviously you are not aware of the scientifically proven fact that girls are evil.

But just for trying half a semester they can tell people for the rest of their life that they were going to go to Johns Hopkins and be a neurosurgeon but they changed their mind because <insert other profession> interested them more.

One of the new trainers on The Biggest Loser introduced himself by stating that he had a "pre-med background." And then said something about how this helps him be a better trainer.

1 C in gen bio = pre-med background.

Haha Yea I saw that and didn't really know what to make of it. having a pre-med background is worth just about as much as any other science degree. Its not like when you declare pre-med you automatically fall into some crazy universe where all your classes are at the 700 level and you have to fight to the death against other pre-meds for the top spot in your calculus 7 class.😕 Did the guy want the fat people to fall on their knees and worship the fact that he has a "pre-med" background? "WATCH OUT.....TOUGH GUY WITH A PRE-MED EDUCATION COMING THROUGH." come on man.

I agree with the poster above who said "not all pre-meds are pre-meds" couldn't have said it better myself.

i sure as hell hope he got more out of his personal training certification than he did out of his 'pre-med background'...

brb I know what the krebs cycle is
brb I know the basic structure of muscle tissue
brb to help you lose weight I'll be consulting Cambell's Biology 4th ed

I always suspected those in a pre-med club were essentially the children of pre-med advisors. If pre-med advisors tend to be stupid, then those in the pre-med club tend to be stupider. Is this sound reasoning, guyz?

So your pre-med club president probably won't get into med school and will learn the hard way that a sub 30 MCAT score and a poor GPA isn't the recipe for success. Who really cares? It's her life, not yours. No need to disparage her through an anonymous internet forum. Although, I suppose it does support the notion that these types of clubs tend to be a joke.

Yo, you're talking to the king of uninformed asshats. What would you like to know, newjack?

lettuce be reality...this story never took place OP.

Oh lawd... u aware, brah?

stupid question, but I'll ask it anyways. I know it's a med school but what's Mayo?

Mayoclinic. Medical school and a chain hospital. It's pretty damn nice, and competitive. 😴
