After reading the other thread about how many people hate pharmacy school, I'm wondering if there are any students out there that still like pharmacy school?

I know I will probably sound like the biggest nerd in the world, but I do actually like pharmacy school. Pharmacy school has been a goal of mine for years and getting accepted wasn't easy for me, so now that I'm finally doing it I remind myself daily how lucky I am to have this opportunity. I'm a non-traditional student and had a 5 year break after undergrad, so I wonder if that has something to do with me not being burned out yet. (I hated undergrad more than anything, so without the break I don't think I'd feel the same way) Also, my husband works so I don't have to worry about a job during the semester and it gives me much more time to focus on school and more importantly more free time to just take it easy.

Now, I should clarify that while I say I still like pharmacy school, I'd much rather be in my P4 year getting ready to graduate and have all the classwork behind me. I definitely don't love all the time I have to put in studying for exams or the stress that they cause. I just try to get through them one exam at a time. Fortunately, our exams usually come in big lumps so we have several together and then we'll have a few weeks to recuperate before it starts all over again. 😉

After saying all that, I reserve the right to change my mind! I'm almost at the end of my P2 year, so we'll see what next year has in store for me.

Anyway, I'm just thought I'd post this so that all of you that are looking forward to starting pharmacy school in the fall won't think that everyone hates it. There are a few weirdos out there like me that still think it's pretty cool! 🙂

I'm also non-traditional and don't have to work. My husband hired twice weekly maid service, he does the laundry and we split the cooking. I still don't have time for anything else but school (and posting on SDN).

During the summer when I'm getting abused by patients at Walgreens, am on my feet all day and don't get a bathroom break, I remind myself that at least it is better than school.

Overall, i enjoy pharmacy school with all the goods and the bads.

I did my undergrad for two years, so i really did the minimum of pharmacy school admission to save time and $$$ considering i am an international student and every class (3 semester units/ 4 quarter units) i take really cost me roughly $1200, and i normally took 4 classes a quarter during undergrad

i enjoy pharmacy school because i don't have to worry about other goals anymore because now at least i know what i am doing and just have to work really hard for it as opposed to being an undergrad who had to make sure i got straight A's to get in health professional school--pharmacy 😀

Other than that, i cant really complain much. Yeah, of course, studying is always be boring and static (sitting down on my ass for straight 5 hrs or more); getting up early for class, getting only <4 hrs of sleep before the exam; horrible stack piles of group project, HW, and assignment.... 😱 But i guess that's just life, it's not easy; and if i compare my workload school stuff to what dental and med students do, they probably have to work triple times harder!!
:luck:

Thanks pharmagirl, I was getting pretty weary too after reading how much people hate it and the stories I hear from my current pharm friends. I know it'll be tough but I hope it's doable/bearable. I need to make friends with the students that have your attitude in my class next year...if there are any hahhaha

It's a love/hate relationship for me. I enjoy learning new things, but I don't enjoy studying. I like the whole problem solving/analytical side of it. I don't enjoy all the paper writing and presentations.

It will definitely be doable! It is a lot of work, but I think you just have to keep a positive attitude about it. I think the four years will go by a lot faster if you focus on the parts you like rather than the negative stuff.

I'm not sure how hard you had to work to get in, but when things are going bad in school, just try to remind yourself how much you wanted to do this and how excited you were to get accepted. 🙂

As far as finding other students that feel the same way I do... I think there are only a handful of us in my class and most of us are "older" students and sit towards the front. 😳

Yeh, it's a love hate relationship for me too. I mean I don't love every single thing about pharmacy school, but I definitely have more love for it than hate! I just try to remind myself about the good stuff when I'm having a particularly rough week.

i enjoy pharmacy school very much. i think it really depends on your undergraduate experience and your goals. for me, i did my undergrad work at osu (a freakishly large school) and it was for the most part an impersonal experience. pharmacy school is much smaller and you're with the same people everyday. fortunately for me, i like my class very much and have made many good and close friends. even with people i don't really hang out with at least i get to know them and that could be useful for potential networking in the future. it's a much smaller environment and i feel much more comfortable in that kind of environment. if you're one of those people who love to see different people everyday, dislike their class or just want to get out and work, then i can see how pharmacy shcool can suck. for me though, i'm having a very good time. i agree that studying can suck but i like to think of it as delaying work for a little longer and spending time with friends in study groups.
