Does anyone hate science and still becoming a Dentist? Well I was just wondering. 😕 Is anyone bad at science and has to work even harder to succeed in their goal to become a Dentist?

Personally i think if someone HATES science they shouldnt be in dentistry because you are going to HATE dental school(first two years mainly) The science courses in ds are ALOT tougher than undergrad, for sure....

It's ok to hate it as long as you can handle it.

First two years of dental school are 30 units of difficult upper division science classes. So if you can't ace undergrad then you will have lots of trouble in dental school.

Mines closer to 40 units for the first year 🙁 I'm taking 25 alone this semester. Haha, I guess it would depend if you count cariology as a difficult science, hehe.

Anyways, you can hate something and be good at it, like me, I was a math tutor, but I hated math, haha.

Lol first two years? More like all 4 years. You have 2 years of upper level sciences. You have the NBDE I. Then you have the NBDE II. Go to the NBDE II scores section of the dental forum, and you'll see a LOT of 4th year dental students contemplating dropping out of dentistry ALL TOGETHER even after 200k worth of debt because they can't pass the NBDE II and therefore can't get their license to practice. After failing to pass twice, you'll have to wait a year and considerable earning potential. Also, once you fail, you will lose the curve on your repeats and will therefore have to do MUCH better to even pass the 2nd, 3rd, etc. time around.

So my advice to you... if you HATE science... either learn to love it or quit now while you're still $200k ahead. The DAT is a joke compared to the dental boards. I am not at all exagerrating when I say this...If you hate science, you'll LOVE the board exams.

What is the national pass rate for part 1 and 2 (for U.S graduates)? I was surprised when you said a "lot".

..and what makes the board exams as difficult as you're saying?

I just looked at some sample questions on part 2 and they seem very straightforward...

The area of the tooth that is the most sensitive to cavity preparation is the
A. dentin.
B. enamel.
C. cementum.
D. cementoenamel junction.
E. dentoenamel junction.*

You all seem to know so much, am i the only one who doesn't see this as OBVIOUS? I feel utterly hopeless...

Where is doc toothache's comment about this thread? 😀

i didn't see it as obvious either but that's why we have dental school, to teach us this and more so no worries

lol i think he meant straight forward like as in not extremely difficult question formatting, not like we already know these answers.....hopeless is not a good state of mind..

I disliked chemistry with a passion. It is rather dull subject matter at times, and unfortunately I had even duller professors. I did like all of my biology classes though.

You're looking at the ADA sample exam. This is the same ADA that has their sample DAT exam ask if organisms that obtain teir energy from light are called autotrophs.

Here are some questions from previously released NBDE exams... from an era where many people didn't have the privledge of the internet, forums, and wiki as study sources:

Which of the following explains why an increased filling of the ventricle during diastole causes a more forceful heart beat? The increased ventricular volume
a. Diminishes the refractory period of the ventricle.
b. Increases end-diastolic fiber length.
c. Facilitates conduction in the heart.
d. Produces a less than optimal load.

Which of the following analgesics are most likely to cause seizures in an individual with renal insufficiency?
a. Acetaminophen
b. Ibuprofen
c. Meperidine
d. Morphine
e. Propoxyphene

An analysis of an EKG shows P-waves occuring in the ST segment. This would indicate ectopic beats originating in the
a. Atria.
b. A-V node.
c. Lower portion of the Bundle of His.
d. Upper portion of the bundle of His.

Cushing's syndrome is characterized by each of the following conditions EXCEPT one. Which one is this exception>
a. Increased protein anabolism.
b. Increased androgen levels.
c. Hyperglycemia.
d. Hypertension.
e. Hyperkalemia.

Which of the following processes occur after prolonged muscular exercise when oxygen debt is being paid?
a. Lactic acid in muscles continues to increase.
b. Most lactic acid undergoes gluconeogenesis in muscles.
c. Most lactic acid undergoes gluconeogenesis in the liver.
d. Most lactic acid undergoes gluconeogenesis in the brain and heart.

Which of the following condition causes myelin degeneration of the axis cylinders of the peripheral nerves?
a. lead poisoning.
b. silver poisoning.
c. mecury poisoning.
d. bismuth poisoning.
e. tetracycline intoxication.

Now take these questions, and add them to 494 more questions, and try to get 340 correct just to barely pass. Or just don't listen to me, the NBDE I and II are cakewalks. Buy one of the previously released exams and if you can get 50% of the questions correct since they're all so obivous, I will bow down to you since you havn't even entered dental school yet. I'm taking the NBDE I in the summer and the DAT is a joke compared to this.

americanpierg,

1. That person said straightforward, not easy. There is a difference.
2. We study a lot in dental school.
3. Stop picking fights with everyone

Thanks 😀

Who's picking a fight. Maybe you shouldn't view the world in such a pessimistic way. I responded to a message that was directed towards my previous post. Should I be rude and not respond to him? If you don't like the advice, move on and don't respond to it. It's as simple as that. Cruise into your boards with a week of studying under your belt, it's not the like world is going to sit back and cry for you becuase you can't get your license to practice.

I don't think anybody's said the boards will be easy. Considering most schools have over a 90% pass rate on the boards they're obviously doable however. You sure are painting a gloom and doom picture though. I love how you said the DAT is a cakewalk compared to the boards! DUHHH!! Haha!

Oh yeah, and tell your buddy to create his own freaking SDN account to study for the DAT. It's confusing, annoying and makes you look lame when you're studying for the NBDE but posting easy questions in the DAT discussion forum. Thanks.

lol im sorry if i look lame on a random internet forum because i help my friends out. i guess should throw my friends under the bus and build up my internet reputation to be as cool and successful as you 🙂 May one day my lvl 32 mage be as powerful as yours

I never said the boards were impossible, I said they were much harder than the DAT. Then people who can't even break 22 on the DAT come and question about how hard the boards could be since a ADA sample question is so straightforward. I was just giving him forewarning not to take it too lightly. If you're amazing at memorizing stuff and find the boards easy, good for you. If you don't enjoy science, like the OP said he isnt, thenhow are you going to go about studying for the boards?

Haha, I'm just sayin'. I didn't know it was that complicated to create your own account.

Maybe if you stop playing warcraft and worrying about your internet reputation all the time, you wouldn't have a problem of understanding things.

Dang you're right, why am I even trying to be a dentist, I can't even break a 22! I'm so stupid! LOL!

I DO agree, you probably should enjoy science to some degree if you want to get into dental school.

Not sure where all the warcraft references are coming from though, haven't played that since middle school. And that was warcraft II mind you!

Dude you need to get off the forums, you have an intense know-it-all personality and you try to impose your will in every post....it gets old dude, its gets old....an how the hell r u taking the boards if u just made a thread asking if algae are plants?? Yea thats a NBDE question for sure!!!

to OP, i would hope you can at least find SOMETHING about science you like (chem, bio, etc) bc if not you will def resent trying to become a dent. if you can bare with it for 4 yrs (2 big yrs and then on and off throughout school) then you should be fine. look at a lot of schools demographics and you'll see that are majors from all aspects of undergrad education out there and they are all making it...so can you

sorry dude. we all can't be highscool dropouts, man. if you dont want my advice, then don't respond, dawg. my original post was advice for the op and not you, dude, so no need for you to reply to me if you think the boards are a piece of cake, dude. I'm honored you've been following me across these forums, albiet a little freaked out since ive never seen you before. If you wan't an autograph, just ask. Most people just don't, dude, think that it makes much, dude, sense to go into a field, dude, of science when you, dude, hate science, like, dude.

wow, can someone ban this guy or something? sheesh.

to the op,

why do you want to become a dentist? be honest, what attracts you to the profession?

i don't want to criticize, but maybe you just need to reflect on your motivations.

You are getting pretty good at twisting arms.

Hating science and wanting to go to dental school is like hating the sight of blood but considering becoming a butcher.

It might be harder. I think you don't have to love science to be a good dentist though, lol. It is certainly not my overarching passion in life.

Honestly you are just an annoying little internet **** talker, what does me having dropped out of high school have to do with anything? You have no idea who i am or what ive been through, and i highly doubt that you would mouth off to me in real life cuz your probably just a lil punk. If you get on these forums and spew BS all over it people are gunna say somethin about it, now go ahead and keep starting stupid threads and responding to threads in an arrogant, pompous attitude..I can care less, im sure this is the highlight of your life

340 correct to barely pass? What are you smoking? Getting 340 right would probably put you at a 90-92 scaled score, which is enough to be competitive for ortho/OMFS.

340 for NBDE II. NBDE II isn't even required for admittance into ortho, but I'm sure if you took it before entering ortho and get a 340 and they found out, good luck getting in then.

My bad, it was hard for me to infer you were talking about the NBDE II considering all the NBDE I questions you posted. My mistake. You're most recent edit to change "394" to "494" to make it look like you were talking about Part 2 is equally confusing.

Someone who HATES science may think he/she wants to become a dentist, but I don't think they'll ever make it out of Dental school.

Great responses! (Even though some people got off topic).
hajibandeh, I want to become a Dentist because I like it, its a comfortable lifestyle, and my own personal reason. I know I want to become a Dentist, probably since I was in elementary school. I was just wondering about other pre-dentals & dental students view on this.
bigstix808, I enjoy bio even though it may get boring at times.

Angel, It may just be that you're taking Introductory Science courses? The plant/ecology stuff bored the **** out me when I first started.. When we got to the upper divs like physio and neuro it got really interesting. If you want to be a dentist then hang in there... the boring stuff will pass soon!

crazyteeth, I know it gets more interesting as you go along. Oh, I love your icon, is that your pet lion cub? Its really cute! I want one! 🙂 lmao
I was wondering do any pre-dents here take human anatomy? (I know its not a pre req but you get to disect stuff!)I know if your doing nursing & med you have to take it.

NO ONE is going to love or even be interested in every subject covered in all of our science classes (I, for instance, hated gen chem like a previous poster as well). And that's just fine...it surely doesn't mean you need to re-evaluate your motivations for becoming a dentist. On the other hand, if you really HATE anything and everything about science, I honestly don't even know how you came across dentistry as a career option...in that case, you might want to rethink your choice to go to dental school. There's a big difference between getting through it (even though some of it is boring) and hating it...one will break you down much quicker than the other.

perhaps you could define what your understanding of "Science" is then? broadly saying "i don't like science classes" doesn't pinpoint the 'why' of the issue.

from wikipedia:

"A scientist, in the broadest sense, refers to any person who engages in a systematic activity to acquire knowledge or an individual that engages in such practices and traditions that are linked to schools of thought or philosophy. In a more restricted sense, scientist refers to individuals who use the scientific method"

i'd say as a dentist, you are not only a clinician, but in a way you are indeed a scientist. therefore, if it's the content of the courses that causes your distaste, it's likely that d-school courses will also...except to a much greater degree.
