does anyone know if stats is a math course??

SO I emailed U of L and asked them if stats was considered a math course. They wrote back saying it is considered a math course as long as its "science based". So when I emailed them back to ask if the particular stats class i was taking would be considered "science based", their only response was "we would prefer calculus". So in the end, they didnt asnwer my question and I still need to know if stats is a math course.

So...has anyone used stats as a math course and do I really need calc to perform well on my MCAT and in med school if I've already taken a college level math course and a science based stats course??

My stats class was counted as a math course because it was taught directly by the math department. But anyways no, you don't need calculus for the MCAT.

I think the reason that you need stats to count as a math course is important.

Do you want it to count as part of your BCPM on your AMCAS GPA? In this case, stats does count as math and should be included.

Does a certain school have a math prerequisite? In this case, I think many schools are very reluctant to accept stats as a prerequisite in lieu of calculus I and II, unless your stats is calculus-based. You'd have to hound the school for more information, of course.

I don't think you need calc to perform well on your mcat because it's not like there's a calc section.

However, some schools do have a math pre-req or they like to see that you've done some math.

For me, stats counted as a math course when calculating my BCPM.

you should definitely take calc. and also, how're you taking physics if you havent taken calc?

You don't need calc if you're taking algebra-based physics, which is the one required for med school. If you want to take calc-based physics, you're a step ahead of the game, but it isn't required.

Which department taught your stats class?

At my undergrad, the classification for statistics courses rests entirely on which department teaches your particular course. Statistics taught by the math department counts as math, of course, while statistics taught by the business school or the psych department doesn't. I took college-level math (NOT calculus) and math-department statistics--I did pretty well on the MCAT and most schools don't require more, math-wise.

I took a Biostatistics class, which is listed under Biology, and a Mathematical Statistics class, which is listed under Mathematics. The only one that counted as a Mathematics credit was the one under the Mathematics department. =\

I took psych stats and got an A. I entered it as math on my amcas and they changed it to Behavioral sciences. I am still kind of pissed. whatever.

stats are math- i took about 36 hours in the stats department, not math and they were all counted as math
