I was considering getting a cheap netbook for the portability factor but was wondering if the screen was too small for Qbank/ USMLE software. Also, I use powerpoint a lot for path images/ histology and was wondering if a netbook would be too slow to work with a large powerpoint file. I've never used one before so I'd like to have a general idea before I pick one up. Any info would be helpful. Thanks,

A dell netbook

will be plenty for what you just described if you purchase a new stick of 2gb ram to use on the windows starter for the Dell 1012 mini.

I am using it now, multitasking with 10 tabs on FF, powerpoint presentation/poster (each 5 mb large) and microsoft word and there is very minimal lag time. I think you could get away with a lot once you upgrade the ram, which would cost an additional 30 - 40 dollars.

EDIT: battery life is also 7+ hours.

Edit again: the mouse pad takes a little getting used to for clicking (need two hands) but I have definitely adjusted now.

=D

If cloud computing is an option for you, you might not even have to upgrade the RAM. That's all up to you though!

When I got my latest laptop I was initially thinking I wanted a netbook. The more I played with them the less I was enthused with having to settle for an atom processor and the limited performance. If you actually do stick with just general Internet and office applications type of usage then they should be ok. But, I knew I would start using it for more such as HD video viewing, online streaming, music, etc....and thus wanted a "regular" processor.

I went with an Acer Timeline X, 11"'screen, thin and light, great battery life, and you can get a powerful i5 or i7 intel processor. I can easily stream HD video which I had trouble with on any netbook I tried in the stores. Plus the screen is much better than the typical 10" netbook.

I'd suggest going to a Compusa type place and just play with a few and see if the speed, screen and size are things you can deal with.

IMHO, get something with at least 720p resolution (so > 1280x720). It'll look very sharp on a screen that small and give you a lot of real estate for the size. I hated the 1024x600 screen on my Mini 9.
