Does anyone work for Kaiser Permanente?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Your pay will beat retail at 67-75/hr. And, it's really hard to get a job there unless you are an internal hire/intern.

I start working at Kaiser as an intern next week. Can anyone share their experiences and provide me with some advice?

in So cal I know they make their interns work like 30+ hours a week. they pay well but its exhausting because their volume is crazy (ie: pharmacy wait is atleast 30 minutes at all times). at least around here

Unfortunately, here they don't have any paid internships available right now🙁 But I knew someone who was able to place me. So, I'm not required to work a certain number of hours....they are allowing me to work as little or as much as I want.

Due to supply > demand, looks like unpaid internships is the next upcoming trend 🙂

I heard kaiser laid off 500 employees in CA. any truth to this?

oh already done...been going on for a while. in fact we have to turn away applicants for our unpaid positions.

as for kaiser...you become "kaiser-ized." I just know they're heavy on the am care. most kaiser residents i know ended up just working internally.

it's like a big black hole for pharmacists...but a really well paying one.

I believe overall through the system there have been more than that (counting short hour and per diem positions) from the start of the great recession. I have heard of 70+ from 1 Northern CA facility alone. They trimmed quite a bit, but there have been new hires as well.

Changes in technology alone have attributed to some lay offs. For example, when Kaiser went full on EPIC, paper charts became obsolete, and the nice people in the chart rooms were either transferred to open positions or laid off.

I was told by a 30+yr RN4 in Northern CA that up to 400 RNs are being relocated or laid off now.

It's not as "well paying" as people think. there's more money to be made. A lot of people think that because they're paying union dues and everyone wants to get into kaiser that they're making top dollar. This is not true.

The nursing union is incredibly strong and many day shift workers make $80+/hr...they think pharmacists must be making $100/hr. Hell, the nurses sign up to be "on call" on their days off and get 50% of their base hourly while they sit at home. LOL

The only potential benefit to working Kaiser long term is the health benefit on retirement. Medicare premiums should be costly 30+ years from now, and if Kaiser is still standing and can actually afford to pay, this benefit could be very valuable.

Kaiser pharmacy must be deuche-loaded busy. It always takes forever to get a copy from KP. Now in my area, KP don't even let me speak to a RPh directly when I call for a copy; instead, some technician will ask me for a bunch of annoying questions and vaguely promise that a pharmacist will call me back. More often than that, I do not get any return calls from KP. In the end, it is the poor patients who request transfers that suffer.

It's all in house...why is a kaiser pt going to a non kaiser pharmacy anyway?
