Ignoring other circumstances, does the fact that it is your second year applying give you any special attention...positive or negative? Do any of you feel that adcoms view this as determination or interest? How about with schools that you did not apply to the first time?

As a second year applicant, I would say your question is totally subjective. My experience so far (4 interviews) would say that I am considered the same as all other's who are there. I have been given no indication by the interviewer that it meant anything that this was my second time. It does make those who are interviewing with me a little nervous to know my stats, exp, and DAT scores to know that I wasn't chosen. I think it makes them a lot less cocky about the "automatically" getting in with high stats. It certainly humbled me. That is why I applied to 13 schools, not just one like last time.

You only applied to one last cycle? I know your stats are high, but you should always have a back-up (something you obviously realize now). 😎

Does applying a 2nd year give you an up? Typically no. And especially no if you haven't done anything to bolster your application.

If you failed to matriculate in one cycle, then you simply have to find out what the weakness was in your application (GPA, DAT, schools applied to?) and fix it. The competition the next cycle will be tougher than the previous one, so don't expect any change on the adcoms end without making some changes on your end.

Yah, Bup, I have learned the hard way because there was little I could do to improve anything. (Come'on how do you improve a 3.8-4.0 GPA and mostly 20 plus's on the DAT & 6 yr's exp.)

But, sadly I know a few people, making the same mistake. They think because their husband or sibling is in "X" dental school they will get in for sure. All I tell them is look, be prepared to have to apply again and have a back up plan, because there are no garauntees in life.
