I am an immigrant who moved at the US 7 years ago at the age of 15. I am 22 now and still a junior in college. Does my circumstance somewhat help me get into Dental school?

thanks.

if it has affected you adversely, and if you have a good DAT score and gpa it could definitely help.

I have a super strong gpa but have yet to take the DAT. I was just curious being an immigrant actually helps.

LOL this is a very silly statement. Why should you get better treatment versus an applicant with higher stats. Being an immigrant is no different than being very tall... neither should give you a leg up in the admission progress. And before you criticize me, you should know that I'm also an immigrant and I don't believe we should get better treatment since its not fair.

If its silly then what about URM

You can still be URM without being an immigrant though.

I think being an immigrant helps you if you're URM, like from a Latin American or African country.

Dental schools' role is to pick competent individuals who are most fit to serve their constituent patient population. Aside from the economically disadvantaged, I don't think they'd give leeway to applicants for every little flaw they have. If you want an advantage for being an immigrant, who's to say someone who is dumb can't demand an advantage to negate their poor academic performance?

If you're an Asian immigrant, join the party. You're a part of the ORM crowd. A ton of Asian applicants have the same background as you. Statistically, we have the hardest time getting into schools so such a background clearly doesn't help. It could be a further disadvantage if you're international or don't have a greencard yet. In fact, I think it puts you at even more of a disadvantage compared to Asian-Americans as you'd be less culturally competent and might have ESL issues.

Same story if you're a white immigrant, the cultural competency and ESL issue strikes again.

TL,DR: If you're a URM immigrant, you probably get an advantage. If you're anything else, probably not. Just put your best foot forward.

Being an "immigrant" or "being very tall" by itself is not much. However, being an immigrant and being very tall, now we have a "dynomite" combo.

I was in esl when I first moved here but I picked up English really quick and now speak like a native lol. Everybody that I have met would have thought that I was born here.

I only asked this just out of curiosity. I am not expecting to be treated unfairly to others.
I worked hard at my cc and transferred to a 4 year uni and have a 4.0 so far.

So then pray your scores are high enough to get into dental school, dont ask for favoritism because you took ESL lol I'm also an immigrant but I didnt list myself as a disadvantaged student. I had the grades for dental school so I earned my way in, no need to beg for what you should be able to earn.
