Hey SDN members, I am a current 2nd year biology(pre-med), maybe changing to biology health careers (pre-med), at a small private Christian university where we don't have a medical center just nursing house across the street. I was wondering how to increase my chance with job shadowing/internship and volunteer work. I am certified in both child and adult CPR/AED, HIPPA, and Blood Pathogen training from a skill center during my senior year in high school. I am in the process of trying to find job shadowing in my hometown but don't know the best way to go about it, also going to talk to my advisor in order to help out a little bit.

What is the best way to let the desk/doctor know about these abilities when look to shadow or volunteer?

Does these certification matter?

Which is more important job shadowing or volunteering?

If I become CNA certified this summer would that open more possibilities to getting volunteer work because I plan on working at the local nursing home afterwards, would this still be volunteer work?

Thanks

Not really....in most cases, volunteers and shadows do not perform CPR or care for patients.

Why not Volunteer somewhere non-clinical, check off the box, then do real work and gain real experience. If you want to get a CNA certification....then why not use it to become a CNA per diem, part time or full?

At least in my experience, the only cert that helps for volunteering is EMT and only if you volunteer for an ambulance/fire company. Otherwise hospitals, nursing homes, etc. don't want you to have any certification or if you do, you're generally not allowed to use it. Volunteers can't provide medical care because of liability issues.

I plan on doing student program at Hurley Flint Medical Center for physical medicine as a non clinical during the summer, but I don't know if there is a waiting list.
If I want to job shadow an physician should I appear in person or call in? If the physicians number is offer, is it better to call them?
Also do volunteering look better for med school than getting paid to work in the office or nursing home?

I just shadowed 3 doctors yesterday and today (I really know how to have fun on Spring Break, huh?) and I have NO qualification/ certification whatsoever. I also didn't need any certification to volunteer.

The Docs and hospitals understand you're just a pre-med, so they don't expect you tell really have anytthing

The whole point of clinical volunteering (except EMT) is so you can get the clinical experience that medical schools want without having to spend time getting certs and all that good stuff.
