I may have to take one or two of my science pre-reqs at a local community college, does DO schools accept those? I no for allopathic it depends on the school but what about osteopathic schools? Thanks

Yes it's fine.

Now, tell me more about MD schools that don't take CC courses for pre reqs. I know it may be frowned upon, depending on the school, but I wasn't aware of any school that forbids it. Source?

I have about half of my science credits at a CC and I was accepted this year. I don't think it really matters as long as you did well. I'm sure having all University cred would be better overall but you should still be fine.

All my pre-reqs except for Organic Chemistry were taken at a community college and I was accepted to a DO school. I am not sure if all DO schools take community college classes though.

CB, I'm with you, I've never heard of an MD school that forbids it either. I have plenty of friends who were accepted MD with CC science credit.

Yeah there is a lot of good and bad info floating around. However, we try to be vigilant in assessing sources of info, especially when they may affect the decisions of others. Of course, you in particular should be concerned with the source of this info that you're quoting, as it pertains to you directly.

I also know several people with CC pre reqs who went to MD schools. But if you find an example where CC pre reqs aren't accepted, please post it for the curious among us.

The University of Illinois would prefer that the coursework be from a university. I read that on there website somewhere a few months ago.

That doesn't surprise me, as it seems to be an unwritten rule to do as many pre reqs and upper divisions in what is (perceived to be 😉) as rigorous an environment as possible.

Still curious if any schools outright reject CC credits for pre reqs and publish this practice.

Kinda resurrecting an older thread here, but...

I had the same question awhile back--I'm doing ALL of my prerequisite coursework (General/organic chemistry, physics, and genetics) at a community college. I'm not willing to spend four times as much money to take these courses from a university.

I contacted the medical schools I was most interested in and point blank asked them what they thought of CC credit. All of them answered and most said it makes no difference as long as you've got some upper division stuff from a university (and do well in it). Kirksville said they'd probably ask about it during an interview, but you're fine as long as you've got a reasonable explanation (and they said that saving money is certainly a legit reason).

Bottom line: contact the schools you want to go to the most and see what they say. Trust me, it'll put your mind at ease!

Good luck!

Yes its fine. I had a lot of hours at a CC got accepted to the first 3 I interviewed at, got an interview at all but 3 (NYCOM, UNECOM, UMDNJ) schools I applied to. :luck:

I agree with EdCLS-- I mean as long as the CC is legit through your primary (AACOMAS...) then you're probably fine.

Just to followup for KCOM... I did my undergrad (majored in City Planning) at a 4-yr university then got a job where I worked during the day but needed to take quite a few prereqs in order to apply to KCOM. I did 20 hrs at CC (Physics, Org Chem and General Chem plus labs) and it didn't raise any concerns during my interview.

Yet, I know several people that went to U of I with CC credits in their core sciences, so don't let this dissuade you.
