Can a job be considered community service? I dont have much volunteering due to having a full time job throughout college. I am considering Loyola, but I have read that they really care that you serve others. Does this mean you should have worked for FREE? Because I mean if you are working at Taco Bell and you are helping the customers, to me, that's community service because you are serving the community. does a job qualify as "serving others"?

Just about anyone should have 4-8 hour/mo of free time that can be devoted to service. I do it face-to-face in my own community while holding down a full time job, raising my kids and helping out on this board.

A job in retail or food service is not "service".

Find somewhere that will allow you to do a few hours in one day per month. I love volunteering, but not everyone does but its a necessity. Find something your interested in, and make sure your not getting paid. Sometimes your job will do community service, if your job does, that can be considered community service. But please don't try to tell the ADCOMS you get paid for your community service at "taco bell" they will reread your app just to make sure they aren't crazy, then laugh hysterically. Many if work, carry a heavy load, have families, and still do thr premed extras. Find your niche and help the community. Dude just do what ya gotta do.🙂

It's customer service.

Now if you organized something where Taco Bell was helping the community, then that would be community service.

The Taco Bell reference makes me think troll, but I'll answer nonetheless.

Community service can be free, but it needs to serve and improve the community. Therefore, not all work is community service. In fact, the large majority of jobs will not be community service. If however your job is serving the homeless, staffing the local underserved clinic, or going above and beyond in ways that help your community but happen to get you some money, that can certainly be seen as community service. Just as non-profit community organizations can still make profit, so can you. But the focus needs to be on the community, not on layering ground beef and cheese in a delicious crispy shell. Here's the easy way to differentiate: why do you do that activity/job?

Maybe if you were some kind of a paid coordinator of supervising a community health project it MIGHT. But Taco Bell, no.

I like your approach and you're cleared for landing.

If I set the curve in my bio class can it be considered as a "leadership role in an academic setting"? Because I mean if you are setting the curve in class you are being a good role model for fellow students, to me, that's a leadership role in an academic setting. does the role qualify as "research experience" since I made an excel sheet with everyone's grade stats/deviations?
That should count for 4 credits in Gunning 101.

uhh...when you think further..ANYTHING can be community service according to your thought process..even when you are a student..you are essentially serving the community by not becoming homeless or a druggie...see where I'm going with it? But as others said..'community service' is not paid..if it's paid it's employment (even if you are getting paid in a soup kitchen)...

There is some paid service .... I think that Peace Corps, Jesuit Volunteer Corps, CityYear, etc pay a stipend for living expenses but at far less than market rates for college grades could be considered volunteer service and, in some respects, employment, too. No one will confuse room, board, health insurance and $100/mo stipend with working at Taco Bell.
