Hi all,

I haven't found any posts on this(indicating I'm either an idiot for thinking of this as research or no one has had this situation) so I figured I'd try. I did a library/ metaanalysis for part of my bio class on the effects of stem cell treatment on MS and was wondering if this counts as doing research. It was with two other people, for a grade and in pubishable format but unpublished.

Thanks,

No.

Ummm, not really. If it did, then any class term project would count.

Research to me is asking a question and then answering it, or testing a hypothesis.

It's not the end of the world if you don't have any research experience when applying to DO schools. Maybe for Stanford or Harvard.

Technically we did that, we as individuals found a group of people with common interests and decided on a question we wanted to answer, ours was, are mesenchymal and hematopoietic stem cells safe and effective compared to common corticosteroid treatment. We then spent the semester researching case studies and clinical trials and put these through statistical analyses to determine the answer to this question. The research for this class was designed to be a real research experience, that is the only reason I asked. As for being graded, I don't think that is a disqualifier, as we had the option to either find a mentor and work for them in their lab doing research for the semester and producing a similar research paper, or do a metaanalysis on the topic of our choosing. Just felt I should clarify, but I get it if this is still not really considered research.

I'm pretty sure that any "research" you do in a class for a credit/grade does not count as extracurricular research, which is the kind of research people are referring to for AMCAS. Otherwise, as Goro said, every single pre-med would have research experience.

Ahh, okay. That makes sense.

I agree with others, it doesn't sound like traditional research since it was for a class.

Meta-analyses are usually a lot of work. It would be cool if you could get it published, though.

Oh ffs, that's what it's called?

I referred to mine as an article dissection. Meta-analysis is indeed the proper definition of what I'd done.

You need to get it published for it to count for anything. That's all that really matters, whether you did it for a class or not is a red herring.
