Is there any chance that the stuff causes neurons to commit apoptosis or causes some other permanent damage to the brain?

I ask for a few reasons :

1. All kind of elective surgeries, some of which were done on me, from wisdom teeth to orthopeadic screw removal use general anesthetic. Most of these procedures there is a way they could be done using locals and nerve blocks. I was never given a choice.

2. My grandma, who was in end stage alzheimers, but still conscious before a hip replacement, never woke up after the surgery. Granted, much of her brain was probably dead from the alzheimers, but what else could have killed the last few neurons she needed to function?

3. There's all kind of research showing the GA causes brain damage in lab animals, especially young rats.

4. Why else would there be efforts to limit the time that a patient is knocked out?

If you have questions about medical care provided to you or to your family members I encourage you to discuss your concerns with your physician.
Internet forums are not the right place to seek medical advice.
Thank you.

I ask for a few reasons :

2. Elderly people with end stage alzheimers, but still conscious before a hip replacement, sometimes never wake up after the surgery. Granted, much of their brains might be dead from the alzheimers, but what else could have killed the last few neurons they need to wake up?

Reposted with personal examples removed. Honestly, I could care less what the answer is...I'm fine and have no "questions" about medical care. I just want to know what the general feeling is on this.
