Since everyone in this forum already went through predental and most likey got their bachelors. Will it hurt ones chance to get admitted to dental school if your associate or bachelor was gained at a online school?

Just wanted to know.

yes. If you compare somebody with an online degree and someone who graduated from an Ivy League school, obviously the Ivy League graduate has better credentials.

Unless it is from an accredited 4 year undergraduate University, I doubt any dental schools would be very interested in an online degree compared to a 4 year degree. Getting into dental/medical school takes a lot of work and dedication that I think is best seen in achieving a degree from a 4 year institution. Further, I doubt many, if any, online schools would offer the pre-req's (Chemistry and Physics courses plus labs.) There's a lot to be said for sticking it out in extremely competetive science classes for four years, it shows that a student will do well in dental school and also shows their commitment to becoming a dentist. Getting a 1-2 year online degree doesn't seem to show the same commitment.

With the competitivness of dental school applications and the limited number of seats, you want to give yourself the best possible shot and not limit yourself in any area. I think an online degree will limit you greatly. This is just my opinon though, call the adcoms yourself and ask them what they think.

Most traditional universities are now offering online degrees. The reason why I asked is because military takes a lot out of you. I'm only limited to the colleges that offer classes at military bases. Pen State, Columbia College, University of Maryland are among some of the schools offering.

I guess my only option would be to get out and go to school, right. Or just get the general studies out of the way first. What do you think?

I agree with eveyone here but I recently came across on-line/mail-order degrees. I wondered, if it had a reasonable name, offered official (or official looking) transcripts, would admission committees be able to see through it? Check out this website, it has "believable" transcripts and you can buy a bachelors, masters, doctorate or all of them. I wonder if it's been tried.

Did you get your "online" degree from the jail house?! It won't hurt your chance to get admitted to dental school because you never have the chance to begin with!

I would say that it depends on the school and on the LOR's you get from profs. PPl rarely realize that schools go thru accreditation in order for the students to recieve federal student aid. AdComs are gonna wanna know why you had to get a degree on-line. I mean, was the on-line school better than the local college? Did you have to move around a lot b/c of the military so it was better to get it on-line? Did you take all of your courses on-line? etc

First of all if you read my first post I stated

"if your associate or bachelor was gained at a online school"
I'm sure you understood the word "IF". It will probably mean also that I haven't received my degree yet. For your information I go to Pen State, and no I did not go to prison. As a matter of fact while you were doing your prereqs for dental school, I was stationed in Iraq trying to defend your freedom.

no schools love to bring people with no lab experience into the interviews.

I know it's fraud. I'm not endorsing it. I just wonder if admission committees would see through it or if anyone's tried it.

Are you serious? Of course they would see through it. They don't just spend two minutes glancing at your application- they will carefully look at all parts of your application.

You could pull it off as long as you could get a transcript from online sent officially from the university showing every course you've taken in school, along with finding a great DAT score online and have it sent directly from the testing center that has four camera's on you as you take the test. Give it a try. As to the first post. An online degree will do you no good. Most schools won't even accept any required class from a junior college. Good Luck.
