Does Gross Lab make you hungry???

For some unexplainable reason I always get super hungry during gross lab. More often than not my stomach starts growling within an hour of being close to our cadaver.... I usually eat a decent lunch around noon and lab usually runs from 2ish-5ish.

I'm not sure if it's the time of day, the smell of the cadavers (EW!) or some psychologial subconcious reaction to raw meat (even more EW). Has anyone else experienced this or am I just plain crazy (which is highly possible)?

I think it's the embalming fluid, I've heard rumors that it can make you hungry. I also used to get seriously hungry during lab even when I had eaten just before. Anyone else know for sure?

Youre not alone. When I was doing anatomy at UCD, it always seemed like by the end of lab, everyone was craving Cattleman's ( a steakhouse about 15 mins down I-80). 👍


I also have a severe aversion to anything washed in Downy these days due to my time in the anatomy lab.

Scraping fat looks kinda like butter. Anyone else notice that? I dunno about you guys, but the human brain loook sooooo tasty?? Not that I'd ever take a big chunk out of it with my teeth, but just saying...

I always got hungry in lab, no matter if I had just eaten or not. One of my friends said it was probably part of our natural carnivorous tendencies, seeing all that meat. This seemed very gross to me, but I can't think of any good explanations.

Maybe it is just because you are standing up.. and moving and more active, hence burning off more energy and getting hungry.

I had my first anatomy lab, the other day and several of the students, complained of being unexplainably hungry. I thought there were joking or weird, but apparently this is common.

i did this too.

we had gross lab from 9am-12, 3-4 days a week. no matter what i had for breakfast, i was always STARVING by the time i got out of lab. i eventually started taking a granola bar break and it made life (and my lab partners's lives) much better.

Yeah, I hear ya.
I visited COMP and attended lecture and lab, felt so hungry...
Now during surgery in lab I get hungry as they open the cats...so wrong
And the cats are not preserved, so I do wonder if it has anything to do with the formalin/phenol/etc. 😕

Yeah, I used to be hungry in gross. But then again I'm always hungry. Very fast metabolism.

i've had an anatomy prof confirm that the chemicals stimulate hunger.......at least i know now that i'm not weird to think the muscles look like tuna/roast beef/turkey anymore...

When i cleaned the fecal matter out of the rectum, it kinda looked like the spinach dip at TGIFs.

On at least 5 occasions i have either eaten chopped barbecue before or after lab. yum.

I was always hungry during Gross Lab, the cafe across the street from the med. school saw alot of business at the half-time break during lab, so I figure it is a common phenom.

😱 My lab professor used to eat a juicy Burger King Burger while dissescting. It kind of made me half-expect to dissect out a pickle or fry sauce out of the cadaver.

I craved strawberries... don't know why, but I'll tell you steak was the last thing on my mind when I dissected out a ha-uge chunk of plaque from the cadaver's aorta... I was craving chicken 😀

gross lab makes me hungry, tired and glad that I am 23. I think it 's funny when i go to get something to eat after gross lab and nobody could possibly imagine that 30 minutes earlier I was performing a laminectomy with a mallet and a hammer exposing the spinal chord. It would make for an interesting conversation. So, what did you do this morning?
